Shopping centres

I live close to a massive shopping centre (in leeds) my neighbour is the manager at Topshop and she's informed me that a handful of stores will be hopefully opening on June 1st. They are currently getting things in place to open on this date all being well. This includes primark, topshop and some other large high street stores.

Having a discussion with my other half and I've said I bet it will be so quiet and he's said I must be mad, it will be heaving!

Just wondering what people's opinions will be... surely most people will refrain from going!

One would hope the queues for non-essential shops would be self-limiting, in that nobody is going to be stupid enough to queue for an hour to get into Primark, but I might be proved wrong. It wouldn’t be the first time I had overestimated the intelligence of the British public...

Nothing to do with intelligence people are ready to get out to some sort of normal as long as they keep a distance it's fine. I say that as someone who wouldn't queue mostly because I find shopping for the sake of it bores me to tears.

PawFives · 20/05/2020 21:04

Thought it was the White Rose! Last there at the end of February with my sister and our kids - totally normal at the time but feels like another world now!

LIZS · 20/05/2020 21:05

In our local high st centre only Boots, Superdrug, WHSmith/Post office and M and S were open. However M and S have rearranged the lower floor where food is to include an offering of womenswear, menswear, lingerie and kids. Discount rails and staff encouraging browsing, so a soft reopenng to shift seasonal stock.

Cheesypea · 20/05/2020 21:09

People round here will go totally bonkers when primark reopens. Ill need to stay away for quite some time for my own protection!

Ghostlyglow · 20/05/2020 21:13

It will be heaving, I bet. If you go, expect it to take all day.

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 20/05/2020 21:15

I reckon my dd would wait in an hour queue to get into primark. I'll probably join her as well, I miss going shopping.

Samtsirch · 20/05/2020 21:21

June 1st seems to be the magic date for every thing at the moment !
I think June 1st will find me hiding under the duvet....

DianaT1969 · 20/05/2020 21:22

Does anyone else wonder if Primark regrets not having an online presence? I think they would have sold lots of lounge wear, exercise gear and home decoration over lockdown. I wonder why they have never bothered?

ginsparkles · 20/05/2020 21:30

I suspect you will see high street open ahead of indoor shopping centres, as they know that it spread more in confined spaces.

I don't fancy going shopping right now to be honest. But I'm sure some people will. I think it will be busy the first week or so and then die down.

Giganticshark · 20/05/2020 21:42

Beaches are heaving, the shops will be too

ssd · 20/05/2020 21:47

I think it'll be really stressful, and not the nice browse we are used to. I read the virus stays on material for 3 days, so will we be encouraged not to touch anything?

thatcarolebaskinbitch · 20/05/2020 21:49

I'll be going to white rose but only for a five guys then I'll leave again Grin five guys chips are the only food I've been craving in lockdown but don't fancy driving into Leeds city centre for them!!

DahliaDay · 20/05/2020 21:56

It will be absolutely manic

The poor staff will have their store trashed, feel sorry for them already

DahliaDay · 20/05/2020 21:57

Is 5 guys even open??

thatcarolebaskinbitch · 20/05/2020 21:58

I'm Leeds the one in the city centre is for delivery and click and collect but they don't deliver to where we live, I imagine if the white rose has shops opening then five guys will open their branch there.

highmarkingsnowbile · 20/05/2020 22:01

Can't wait for shops to open. Great. We can't keep everything closed forever.

MorrisZapp · 20/05/2020 22:16

Why are posters assuming anywhere will be 'heaving'? With social distancing, shops will be limiting numbers allowed in. They won't be allowed to trade otherwise.

highmarkingsnowbile · 20/05/2020 22:18

Because it's more fun to some to catastrophise and doom monger and get self-righteous, Morris, and this virus is a dream come true for such people.

highmarkingsnowbile · 20/05/2020 22:20

And don't forget, you'll have to use masks! You must! Fab for criminals. Chor someone's contactless card, put on a mask, use it, bang, no good description of your face. But hey, Covid. That's the most important thing, you know.

Sparklingbrook · 20/05/2020 22:29

Five Guys in Worcester is open for take out and delivery. Not a fan though sadly.

PickAChew · 20/05/2020 22:30

Our retail park markses has had its whole ground floor open for a few weeks, now. They've got a 50% off sale, at the moment, and I bought a couple of pairs of jeans with my food shop, on Monday.

It won't be mayhem. I'm sure the queues will be long but it's easy enough to entertain yourself.

DahliaDay · 20/05/2020 22:32

It will be heaving because stores are allowed to let in an amount of people they are comfortable with.... no government set amount here, it’s up to stores......and as they have been closed so long they will be keen to play catch up

DahliaDay · 20/05/2020 22:33

The queues and extra people milling around outside in the streets will also add to that

stuckindoors77 · 20/05/2020 22:34

It'll be busy, with massive socially distanced queue's snaking round the shopping centre...... I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole!

Voice0fReason · 20/05/2020 22:49

I have no intention of going shopping.
There will be a second wave, I don't want to be part of it.
