Raging on behalf of my friend

She is moving back to the UK after a few years abroad. They have been teaching overseas and it's time to come home!

Completely stressful time anyway, with added Covid complications, and she has become a mum in the last year too, to boot!

She applied for several teaching jobs but has been unsuccessful so far with a mixture of reasons given, but today she was told that she "wouldn't cope" being a new mum and having just moved back to the UK so they weren't in a position to offer her the job. They then said that also they were having a restructure and the position would now be teaching a different year group which my friend is qualified to do, but lacks the direct experience.

I was outraged that they initially told her she didn't get the job on the basis she was a new mum and was making a life-changing move.

WTF?

I think she should complain but she doesn't have the energy! She obviously doesn't want to work there now anyway, but I am literally outraged that they cited that as a reason.

Would you make the effort to call them out on it?

That's disgusting and would only ever be said to a female applicant.

ItsMsAtomicBobToYou · 20/05/2020 10:57

Isn't that illegal?Twats.

Peachy92 · 20/05/2020 11:11

Definitely would raise that but assuming it was verbal which would be difficult to prove

NickMyLipple · 20/05/2020 11:15

I'm confident it is illegal and discriminatory.

I think that she should definitely complain just to bring it to the head teacher's attention that the reasoning he has given is utterly shite.

I am actually gobsmaked that it can be so blatent in this day and age.

Were they daft enough to put that in writing?

NickMyLipple · 20/05/2020 11:35

@L0bstersLass - sadly not... she had an email from them on Monday saying that they were going to try to contact her but nothing happened.

I'm not suprised they didn't put it in writing!

I'm not surprised either, but it's a shame they didn't as I'm quite confident should could take action against them if they had.
