How much sick pay do you get?

Trying to work out how much to offer a new employee.

Thanks in advance.

No idea in one of my jobs. The other pays nothing - so people either come in anyway or have a day unpaid - this employer has a really high sickness rate and huge staff turnover

FizzyPink · 18/05/2020 20:46

Wow some of these are generous! We get 1 month and they’re even difficult about that. A friend of mine suffered a breakdown after working all hours for months which her manager completely failed to notice. After her month was up they told her to return to work or they’d stop paying her and she asked for just another week to feel fully ready and they refused meaning she then struggled when she came back. This from a company that bangs on about kindness and mental health all day

Redcrayons · 18/05/2020 20:47

2 weeks full pay. And it’s a rolling year, so you don’t ‘reset’ your sick pay allowance at the end of the year.

They can be flexible for serious long term illnesses. A colleague got half pay for months when he was having chemotherapy.

inwood · 18/05/2020 20:47

Six months and then insurance kicks in.

moveandmove · 18/05/2020 20:47

We get full pay for a year.

PontiacBandit · 18/05/2020 20:49

In my contracts it's always been stat only, however it is been discretionary and I've been paid full for sick time. I've not been off sick longer than a week though, long term I expect to be paid stat.

DrDreReturns · 18/05/2020 20:50

Medium sized private sector employer. After a years employment you get 5 days a year on full pay. After that it's statutory.

LettuceP · 18/05/2020 20:51

If my boss believes me then he will let me use my holiday, if not then ssp.

TheHobbitMum · 18/05/2020 20:52

I get one month full pay then down to SSP

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 18/05/2020 20:52

3 weeks full pay then SSP.
That's pretty good for private sector

LST · 18/05/2020 20:53

I get nout for the first week then SSP.. I used to get full pay indefinitely reviewed on a 6 month basis..

Nonestopcaberet · 18/05/2020 20:54

Weekly paid get so only. Salaried is ‘at managements discretion’.

Puddlesplasher · 18/05/2020 20:54

Staggered at some of these. My last job for a high street bank was three days sick pay.

LilyMarshall · 18/05/2020 20:54

6 months full. 6 months half.

Nonestopcaberet · 18/05/2020 20:54

SSP, that should say

katsucurry · 18/05/2020 20:55

5 months full and five months half based on service, capped as at max (government). Perhaps start with one month full, one month half in the first year. Six months + is a huge amount for a small business to afford, especially for an employee with no length of service, but SSP isn't great either..

REdReDRE · 18/05/2020 20:55

5 paid days on a rolling year then SSP. I pay £9 a month insurance that pays out if I'm off more than a month to cover my mortgage.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 18/05/2020 21:06

3 month full pay, 3 months half pay.

Teddypops · 18/05/2020 22:10

Some very varied responses! Thank you.

I'm just aware with the current climate that people may have to self isolate, so I was trying to be flexible and kind.

I might give 2 weeks full pay, which would cover someone self isolating but that's it.

You sound lovely op!

I work for a big multinational distribution firm and we get ssp and no more.

Mmmmycorona · 18/05/2020 22:20

Self employed so none. Dh is private sector, he gets ssp.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 19/05/2020 08:12

I am now public sector but previously always worked in the private sector. The “worst” sick pay terms I ever had was three months fiull pay, three months half pay then SSP. I honestly thought SSP only was unusual!

Settle59 · 19/05/2020 08:59

NONE here - ! just good old SSP

Rainb0w · 19/05/2020 09:22

Three paid episodes a year though if you go home half way through the day and back in the next day its normally pushed under the carpet and forgotten about they are pretty fair with it to be honest have luckily never had to ask about long term sickness but I know somebody was off and paid for 9 weeks.

itbemay1 · 19/05/2020 09:25

2 weeks full pay only. SSP if any more than 2 weeks in a year. NHS!
