What about the five ‘tests’?

When the government announced that schools may start to reopen on June 1st, it was with the caveat that all five ‘tests’ were met, one of them being the reduced ‘R’ rate.
However, it now feels more and more like a foregone conclusion that schools will definitely reopen on June 1st from the news articles and briefings.
All mention of the five tests seem to have been forgotten.
Is the government going to properly assess the data and give us an update before June1st or do we just assume schools are reopening then?

I quite agree.
Germany started easing restrictions when it got it down to 0.7. We’re above that now.
One of the tests is ensuring supply of tests and PPE can meet future demand. Can the government put their hand on their heart and say we’ve met that? Doubt it.
The fifth test is being confident any adjustments would not risk a second peak that would overwhelm the NHS. Without a vaccine, this will be a very tricky one to navigate.

1. We must protect the NHS' ability to cope. We must be confident we are able to provide sufficient critical care and specialist treatment right across the UK

This might reasonably be considered achieved. In terms of COVID care that is. Getting the rest of the NHS running alongside infectious disease services is still work in progress

2. “We need to see a sustained and consistent fall in the daily death rate from coronavirus so we can be confident we have moved beyond the peak”

In some regions this seems to be true

3. Reliable data from SAGE showing the rate of infection is decreasing to manageable levels across the board.

Estimates of R0 have been

So are they going to reassess the situation before June 1st? And, if so, when?
I fear the figures will be manipulated anyway because the government seems hell bent on sending children back to school come what may, regardless of the ‘science’

I noticed this too op.

They are reassessing on the 28th May are they not? That's the final go ahead for schools. So it could change yet.

hippohector · 18/05/2020 22:46

I hadn’t heard that date seaduck - thanks.
I still worry it’s a foregone conclusion though.
I want kids back at school but only when it is safe and appropriate measures can be put in place in ALL schools.

Raab repeated that schools would only open if they were, a number of times on yesterday’s briefing. I don’t know if they have/haven’t been met, but not sure they’ve been forgotten.
