Hi! Is this just a normal android tablet where you can download the normal apps like on a eg samsung phone? Sorry, v untechnical Blush

It's similar to android but it's a slightly different operating system, so you don't get exactly the same selection of apps, but it does work in the same way yes.

BertieBotts · 18/05/2020 12:51

Like how on a samsung vs an iphone, you can get different apps but they are essentially the same thing.

Inaquandry19 · 18/05/2020 12:53

You can add google play so you can download android apps. It is a little complicated but it can be done.

Rafflesway · 18/05/2020 12:57

Yes and it’s excellent!

I have an Amazon Fire Tablet and a mini iPad and - apart from anything specific to Apple - there is nothing I can do on the IPad that I can’t do on the Fire Tablet.

My one piece of advice would be to pay the small amount extra - usually around £5 - to buy the “No Ads” Fire Tablet. That way you won’t have constant ads popping up on your screen.

I am not very technologically minded either and my friend, who is a complete novice with such things, has also just bought a Fire Tablet on my recommendation and she loves it.

No shortage of apps. To download from Google.

Myfriendanxiety · 18/05/2020 13:02

@rafflesway that’s interesting as we have the fire and the iPad mini too and absolutely hate the fire. It’s soooooooo slow it becomes unusable and the user interface just doesn’t feel comfortable to me. Maybe I’m just too used to iPads but I was really disappointed in the fire.

MrsTaytodarling · 18/05/2020 15:11

Great! Thanks. They're v cheap

I've got one. The ads are on the screensaver/lock screen and you just swipe past that ignoring it, like everyone does for ads. There's no ad blocker for the browser but again, just ignore. If you don't link it to an amazon account you get no ads at all, but that does limit functionality a small amount. Not very much though - it is stuffed with icons that I've never touched.

It gets a lot of use, it is a bit slow and I certainly wouldn't trust it for online banking but otherwise it was £50 five years back and still going strong.

thegcatsmother · 18/05/2020 18:41

I use mine for online banking, and have done for years. I didn't like dh's iPad, but love my Fire.

missmouse101 · 18/05/2020 18:45

It's slow and the camera is absolute shite. I am so fed up with it.

Shinygoldbauble · 18/05/2020 18:50

I have one and I love it. I don't find it slow but it's the only tablet I've had so nothing to compare it with. I watch tv on Prime and Netflix on it and use it to look at Instagram. I would highly recommend it for the price.

poshme · 18/05/2020 18:51

Storage is dire.
My kids have them.
The chargers break very easily.
They're cheap,

JoanOfCentreParc · 18/05/2020 19:02

I bought one at the start of lockdown - my laptop gave up the ghost and I needed something to watch stuff on (DH is wfh, we're in the lounge together so I can't disturb him by watching stuff on the TV). It's great for what I use it for - Netflix, iPlayer, YouTube, Brit Box etc and the occasional game. Also it's fantastic for Readly. But the keyboard is absolutely shite and it's impossible to type anything longer than a few words without it taking ages, so MN/social media etc is done on my phone.

DD sorted it so I can use it as a proper Android tablet (don't ask me how) which made it far more user friendly. The Silk browser is slow and a bit useless.

The camera is bobbins but for the money it's a great entertainment tablet. The month of free Prime was useful too.

Ghostlyglow · 18/05/2020 19:48

Try a Huawei media pad. They're ace. More expensive than a fire but loads better Smile

Elieza · 18/05/2020 20:06

I find mine slow too. Im used to an iPhone though as it’s pretty quick when doing stuff.

I miss the ability on a tablet to plug in anything. But perhaps it’s as my tablet is old that it has no USB’s.

guessmyusername · 18/05/2020 20:30

Got rid of mine and replaced it with a Samsung tablet. Much more user friendly

Rafflesway · 18/05/2020 23:08

I honestly don't find mine slow at all!

Cuppaand2biscuits · 18/05/2020 23:13

I have literally dug ours out of drawer today, charged it and turned it on for DD to use as a Kindle as we're running out of books.
The charger is so crap, it's the same as the one I use for my Samsung phone but just doesn't seem to fit right. So often it falls out and isn't charged when you go back.
It is also impossibly slow. I thought it never got used because we were all just so used to the iPads but maybe it is just rubbish.

Whateveryoudoordontdo · 18/05/2020 23:23

It's an enormous faff to get anything Google on it. I can't install duo on mine at all and that's what I bought it for. I hate mine and I've had it for two days.

TheHighestSardine · 18/05/2020 23:33

You can just send it back Whateveryoudoordontdo.

They're... okay? Don't ever get an old one, always get current gen, because they're the absolute minimum level of hardware for the present day. You get what you pay for in Android tablet land - these are cheap, and fine for many things but will be unacceptably slow if you're the sort of person who has Whatsapp and Plex and Youtube and a dozen web browser pages and a game and and and all running at the same time.

If you're a "one or two things at a time" user, they'll be fine. As long as that one thing is something that it'll do without needing the Google Play store because it's an arse to get going.

ilovebluecheese · 19/05/2020 00:01

I have one I brought at Christmas for £35. I only use it for reading from the kindle app. I brought a case and a tempered screen. No problem reading outside and works well for me.

I suppose it depends what you want to use it for. Mine is solely reading so I don't get disturbed or distracted lol

Shinygoldbauble · 24/05/2020 00:10

I really don't find mine slow at all. I use it for Instagram, Facebook, Netflix, Amazon Prime. I also play Candy Crush and have a few other games downloaded.
I rarely use the browser though and I don't use the camera.
