Car tax

Help!
I moved houses and stupidly sent out my VC5 form before changing the address on my driving licence. I sent it out a few weeks ago, and just seen that DVLA have returned my direct debit, and it now says my vehicle is untaxed!
What do I do? It says on their website that only key workers can call at the moment. I am not using my car right now but have to park it on the street.

Assuming you have your logbook, I believe you can still change your address and pay online: www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax

@Stefoscope Thank you for your reply.
No I sent the whole thing to DVLA to change the address, it said on the form that the whole V5C has to be posted. It should have been back within two weeks but guess there are delays at the moment because of the coronavirus. Stupidly didn't scan it before sending it.

You should still have the green section (V5/c) of the V5 surley? (The V5/C is your proof of ownership till your details are updated).
You can go online and use the reference on it as the new keeper to tax the vehicle as you should have done as soon as you bought it.

Sorry that should rear V5c2 is the green bit.

blossomsarepretty · 17/05/2020 12:10

Ah ok, didn't realise the green bit was all you needed. I had a direct debit set up for the car tax so I don't quite understand why that was refunded when I sent off the V5C (the red looking form), ie the direct debit was taken from my account May 1st, but then DVLA refunded it this week. That prompted me to check my records online and it said, to my great shock, that my car was untaxed. Luckily haven't used it lately.

Hmmm it says online you should use the green slip only when you are a new owner which I am not.

Try online with green bit as the existing keeper without reminder (cant remember what ref it has but would have been sent to your old address anyway.)

blossomsarepretty · 17/05/2020 12:30

@HaudMaDug thanks.

OK will try that. I just don't understand why they have cancelled my direct debit without informing me, it wasn't supposed to end until December. I have post redirection set up from my old address so should have received any correspondence, but haven't received anything from them.

That does sound strange. Sounds like they have changed the owner rather than just address and stopped your Direct debit as if you are no longer liable for that car. (If you had pre paid in full for the year you would have received a refund for the remaining unused taxable months).

blossomsarepretty · 17/05/2020 13:01

@HaudMaDug I know it is really odd. If I hadn't checked my online bank and seen the refund I could have unknowingly driven an untaxed car. Couldn't do the tax online but found another number to call which I think is not just for key workers. Hope they still send me back the V5C, it's now been a few weeks since I sent it and I assume they must have processed this week and my direct debit was cancelled.

At least the new V5 should come to the address you are at because I'd imagine that any ref numbers they may ask you for will now be on the V5 you have not received yet. In the times running up to Covid crisis DVLA were turning V5 paperwork around in a few days but I guess if they are WFH just now then no paperwork will be being sent out. DVLA being in Swansea so still in lockdown. Do you have a kind neighbour who may have a bit of spare driveway space you can use? Hope you get it sorted out as there's nowt worse than worrying about stuff that's outwith your control right now.
Good Luck Gin to keep you sane.

blossomsarepretty · 17/05/2020 13:31

@HaudMaDug I assume because of the lockdown they are all overworked and this must be some sort of admin mistake. But it does indeed seem like I need the form I haven't received yet to pay the tax. Unfortunately everyone here seems to park on the street and hardly anyone has their own drive. Also as we only just moved here I don't really know the neighbours well enough to ask for favours like that. And of course can't ask friends who live elsewhere as I can't drive my car anywhere!
