Online shopping substitutions

I have a click and collect order to pick up later. I have just had an email to say that the potato cakes and fruity teacakes I ordered have been substituted.
This normally wouldn't bother me. Except the potato cakes have been substituted with tomato and herb bagel thins Envy (not jealousy).
The fruity teacakes have been subbed with scones. Scones. How are you meant to toast scones?! Not only that, but I only ordered a single 4-pack of fruit teacakes. I'm being given 24 scones. There's only me in the house!

I'm back from collecting my order. It gets worse. I only ordered 1 pack of potato cakes (6 to a pack). They didn't give me a single pack of tomato and herb bagel thins. Oh no, that's too sensible. I now have three, yes THREE packs of the abominations!
On the bright side, the unicorn shaped crumpet replacements do look like unicorn heads and they gave me 2 packs of them. So, off to scoff unicorn crumpets.

In my recent Asda delivery order they took back the sub I didn’t want, so in some areas you can return but my dsis did a click and collect and they wouldn’t take her subs but she did get a refund, we live in the same town
Asda have always been a bit random with their subs, even before lockdown, but their customer service, as regards refunds etc, is excellent.

Mauvg · 17/05/2020 12:20

@H1978 They certainly are quick. I did the refund and it's just been approved. Haven't decided what I'll spend the £1.61 on yet.

Our store is new to home delivery and click and collect 🙂 we’ve started feeding back the worst subs back to management in the hope that they will do something about them.

We shall see.

ToothFairyNemesis · 17/05/2020 15:33

So you got free items? I don’t see the problem. It’s not like it was essential food eg milk.

swapsicles · 17/05/2020 15:45

I've recently started working as a picker in a supermarket, we start halfway through the night time stock fillers shift so some items aren't available or been delivered into store yet.
As we have to start so early this is why some items are not in stock.
We can override the subs choice but as we are timed tend to not trek the store to find the perfect replacement but I do get the most appropriate item (personal choice though I can't please everyone!) I try my hardest but unfortunately some things just cannot be subbed due to availability.
All I can say is use the notes section for things you really need and let us know what you'd like instead.

Mauvg · 17/05/2020 16:32

@ToothFairyNemesis If you like free food that you won't eat, then yeah, it's great. In reality, I can't stand tomatoes, so the bagel thins will be going in the bin. So will all bar one scone because I don't have the space to freeze them for the next 6 months (I'm not a fan on them).
I ordered potato cakes and fruit teacakes as breakfast foods, because I don't eat cereal. They might not be "essential" to you, but, I likely won't consider milk an essential because I don't drink it.
It's not polite to tell people what is and isn't essential. Thankfully, I do have some bread left in the freezer so I can have toast for breakfast. Given that having something to eat in the morning is a necessity due to having to take my medication with food, it's a little strange to say that any food isn't essential.

I’ve had del monte peach slices subbed with smart price pineapple. I’ll be sending that back.

ToothFairyNemesis · 17/05/2020 17:22

I am shielding and have had 14 missing items and four substations . It’s annoying but as long as I have some food I am grateful for that. I actually thought you thread was a lighthearted jokey thread. Two subs in the current climate is great and you got a full refund.
You have bread so can make toast, that’s great. Try to focus on the positives.
Essential food is really only things like milk for a baby or specific foods like gluten free/dairy or food for children with asd for example.
Your missing items were nice to have but not essential.

DarylDixonsHair · 17/05/2020 17:25

I'm loving the weird substitutions lately! My delivery driver won't take them back so over the past few months I've had free pasta bowls, washing liquid, cheese, tomatoes and hair dye.

Katinski · 17/05/2020 17:29

hair dye? Grin

ilovesooty · 17/05/2020 17:36

I just tick the no substitutions box now.

Mauvg · 17/05/2020 17:41

@ToothFairyNemesis As I said earlier, the 2 I posted about were the ones that jumped out at me. They weren't the only ones. I had other substitutions that were actually sensible. There's no point in posting about sensible substitutions.
Had I not had half a small loaf left in the freezer, would you still be saying that those items that were ordered for breakfast weren't essential? What would you have had me eat so that I could take my morning medication?
Because of my health conditions, I shouldn't be doing click and collect. I should be using home delivery. Unfortunately, I just don't have the space to store the amount of food I'd need to order to meet the minimum spend, so I have to do click and collect. It's still a struggle to meet the minimum and have enough room for an order in the kitchen. However, there is no one locally doing shopping for vulnerable and shielding people so I don't really have much of a choice.

ToothFairyNemesis · 17/05/2020 17:45

Op I was trying to focus on the positives. Have you registered with ASDA as a shielding person. They will give you a weekly recurring slot with free delivery and no minimum spend.

Sparticuscaticus · 19/05/2020 07:47

Mauvg
Did you eat the scones? 😬

sueelleker · 19/05/2020 09:00

hair dye?
Was it the right colour?

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 19/05/2020 10:00

I thought you could request no substitutions at the time you order, certainly can with Sainsbury’s just by ticking a box next to the item saying ok to sub. I do this for anything I particularly want so if it’s not in stock I just do without rather than get a random sub. Under normal times you just send them back but now you request a refund online for any unwanted subs and keep it.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 19/05/2020 10:07

Please don’t bin perfectly good food, offer to neighbours or food bank or even feed to the birds, binning it is such a waste

PorpentiaScamander · 19/05/2020 10:08

My son would be insanely happy if we got sent unicorn crumpets and 24 scones!

But its shit when your subs are things you don't eat. And as they dont accept returned items at the moment then its going to lead to unnecessary waste. Although I'd probably offer them to the neighbours.

DarylDixonsHair · 20/05/2020 16:11

No, the hair dye wasn't the right colour. I ordered dark brown and got medium brown Grin

Herpesfreesince03 · 20/05/2020 16:17

At least you got actual food replacements. I know someone who ordered a bag of onions and got sent a pack of light bulbs as a replacement

ouch321 · 20/05/2020 16:28

I think scones are a perfectly acceptable sub for tea cakes.

Though I can't see why they would send 3 packs instead of 1.

Mauvg · 20/05/2020 17:49

I did not eat the scones. They are squished in the only bit of space available in the freezer waiting for a family member who likes them to be able to collect them.
The bagel thins got listed on Olio. It seems that no one locally likes tomato and herb bagel thins as there is no interest currently!
The dog was happy with the substitution of her treats. Instead of markies, we got mini markies. The dog has decided this means that she has to have TWO markies at once. I'm using her belief in this to train her to do new things.
