Irritating visitors!

Just thinking about how visitors can start to grate after a few days! I have endless stories of poor behaviour but the quickest I got fed up with a guest was in the car on the way TO our house after collecting them from the airport - they turned the radio to another channel without asking!!!! Instantly I was enraged! They stayed a couple of weeks and I counted every day!!! Grrrrr! Anyone else have any similar experiences?

@Dieu it encompassed the minute details involved with every event. Let me give another example. We take her for afternoon tea for her birthday and Mothers day which is normally close together. We have 2 young children, money is tight - 4* hotel.

The time is wrong - it should be served at 3pm (well the hotel offered times between 1-5 and we're trying to work round a 2yo sitting still long enough to eat it)
The wrong forks Hmm
Not enough hot water
The wrong sugar
Not enough choices of teas
etc etc etc etc

Then there was the time we were visiting her where we shopped for and cooked tea and I cleared it all away and washed it all up, on the 2nd night of doing the same I got shouted at that I was washing up wrong Confused It was the last time we saw her....due to circumstances rather than me trying to influence DH or anything.

The one who handed his dirty washing to me on arrival (about a week's worth), expecting that as the woman of the house I would launder and iron it for him.

A bit of cultural dissonance there.

Most of us are able to have the radio on in the background and chat to people. It really isn't that difficult

Unless you have a hearing impairment which then means the radio blots out the voices of your passengers...

Ginfordinner · 16/05/2020 12:00

Exactly EatsShoots, which is precisely my problem.

It is that difficult for me Backforgood

WiseOwl69 · 16/05/2020 12:07

But Gin you weren’t in the OP’s car so I’m not sure why you not being able to have the radio on means she can’t?

Ginfordinner · 16/05/2020 12:11

That's academic. I still think it is rude to have the radio/music on loud in a car when you are trying to have a conversation with other people.

If everyone is OK with that then it doesn't matter.

WiseOwl69 · 16/05/2020 12:18

I don’t recall that the OP said it was loud.

And seeing as her guest changed the radio to another channel we can presume that both parties in the car were ok with the radio being on and therefore as you said “it doesn’t matter”.

GertrudeCB · 16/05/2020 12:23

There is a great thread in classics about what batshit things guests have done Wink

iklboo · 16/05/2020 12:31

Who says you have to have the radio on loud? We never have it on at a level you can't hear / talk over it. They have volume buttons.

ruthieness · 16/05/2020 13:40

Guests who leave the towels neatly folded so we have no idea how many have been used and just have to wash them all but at
least better than those that take the towels and even the bath mat!!!!

Waited until the moment of sitting down for dinner on the first night to let me know they are vegetarian. Then not being ok to just have the (ample) vegetable parts of the meal but expecting a separate, special meal just for them Angry

Coming for 2 days and staying for 10

Coming for Christmas but refusing to get up on Christmas Day and screaming “FUCK OFF!!!!!!” at anyone who tried to rouse them. This was in a house with children.

BIL and SIL- all on the same visit. I could go on but it would be the longest post in MN history.

Yellowshirt · 16/05/2020 21:21

@Ginfordinner I think you need to get your ears tested then! I put the radio on before my seatbelt!

duvetstealer · 17/05/2020 08:05

I have a hearing impairment but I always have the radio on in the car. Besides if I pick someone up and they don't like it, tough shit! My car, my rules.
