Thank you for sharing that paper, it was interesting heroku.

Orangeblossom78 · 16/05/2020 08:30

Yes i saw that thread. OP managed to ignore most of that nonsense I noticed. Most of the replies seemed sensible; maybe things are changing. Or maybe more people are feeling more confident to say what they think as time goes on. It's astounding how some don't even think of the problems caused by this situation and ask for 'evidence' Confused

Orangeblossom78 · 16/05/2020 08:35

Christopher King, head of the Independent Association of Prep Schools said that he expected all 670 schools to reopen to the priority year groups on June 1.

Several MATs saying the same in the News today. Most in disadvantaged areas.

Orangeblossom78 · 16/05/2020 08:36

Including the Harris Federation, which has 23 primary schools in London

Nihiloxica · 16/05/2020 08:37

I think this is a "silent majority" issue.

The people who are the loudest and most strident voices are so certain they are right that they are not reading the room.

It's a bit a bit like Brexit in that way. It has also become tribal, in that asserting your wish for schools never to open is a virtue signal, often made by people with no children.

Orangeblossom78 · 16/05/2020 08:38

"About a quarter of English primary pupils are in MAT schools, which means they have opted out of local authority and can set many of their own rules."

I thought it was more. The 'no PE" teacher on here told me her LA was telling them what to do. So it seems there might be a difference between these groups of schools perhaps

Orangeblossom78 · 16/05/2020 08:40

Yes and look how much we hear about Brexit now! they don't care about that anymore now there is something else to protest about. Grin

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 16/05/2020 08:41

The people who are the loudest and most strident voices are so certain they are right that they are not reading the room

I agree. Of course the most hysterical, panicking, screeching posters are the most vocal. Usually the sensible ones get ignored because they are calm, post facts and arent screaming the room down that people are dying.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 16/05/2020 08:42

One of the things I cant believe lately is one of the members of staff at DS school constantly on social media about how schools shouldn't open til it's safe. Hes really quite vocal on local chat groups. It doesn't sit right with me at all.

Nihiloxica · 16/05/2020 08:43

As someone opposed to academisation of education, yet again I find myself appreciative of people with whom I previously had little common ground.

Steve Chalke's comments yesterday about what school closures were doing to disadvantaged and vulnerable children while the unions witter on about the safety of their members were a revelation.

I think my left wing days are behind me.

Orangeblossom78 · 16/05/2020 08:45

I'm confused why so many are concerned about the RNLI might need to be called out if people go in the water. This hasn't been an issue in the past.

is it because they think the RNLI people might catch the virus as they rescue people? I guess so. But usually do they not just pick people up in the boat so could do this in a socially distanced way?maybe they need some more advice on things such as medical staff get perhaps.

Orangeblossom78 · 16/05/2020 08:46

Again it is all about risk I suppose. Can see why they and mountain rescue might not want to do mouth to mouth atm perhaps

Orangeblossom78 · 16/05/2020 08:47

Ironically some of these posters would shout that austerity / poverty etc wassailing people prior to this, but now seem to have forgotten all that as all thy can see is the virus Confused

Orangeblossom78 · 16/05/2020 08:47

killing, not wassailing Grin

Orangeblossom78 · 16/05/2020 08:48

Wonder what they will think about all the prep schools opening

SpnBaby1967 · 16/05/2020 08:48

People on my FB are almost strumming one out in delight that the R number has risen to 0.7-1.0. Like this confirms their assertions all along, that Boris is a homicidal maniac who just wants to kill off the poor and elderly.

Ignoring the fact that initially the R number rose in blessed Germany and then came back down.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 16/05/2020 08:49

Nihil I had very similar thoughts. Always been anti-academy. Now I am watching with interest. Of course I don't want teachers to die Hmm most of my friends are teachers and I was one until last year, but I am struggling to find sympathy with the unions' stance on this. Which I think is a massive missed opportunity, they could have really capitalised on this of they'd played their cards right.

I definitely think it's much easier to wail "I'm keeping my children home where it's safe" from the comfort of a spacious house & garden.

Nihiloxica · 16/05/2020 08:50

Yes and look how much we hear about Brexit now! they don't care about that anymore now there is something else to protest about.

In pockets they are still trying to claim that Brexit will be worse for the economy than shutting the economy down indefinitely. Hmm

It's also been interesting to watch the Irish border close after years of people (including me) insisting it couldn't be done. Sinn Féin are a big dementor party because being anti-British is their guiding principle. Irish dementors are in a whole other league.

GeraltOfRivia · 16/05/2020 08:53

Thanks @heroku for that link. I'll read it properly later but seeing the data in graphs and charts is pleasing.

Seems to be mixed on the national parks here are some of the more positive / welcoming ones:

Visitor destinations are cautiously preparing to welcome day-trippers after the government relaxed its advice on the lockdown

The South Downs National Park, which covers almost 630 square miles of Hampshire, West Sussex and East Sussex, said that visitors were welcome provided they followed social-distancing guidance.

Many beaches across England are accessible although there are no lifeguards on the 240 that the RNLI normally patrols.

The National Trust, which maintains 780 miles of coastline and 500 properties, opened smaller car parks from Wednesday and will open more next week. The trust
said that “while our houses and gardens remain closed . . . we’re opening some car parks so you can get out into much-needed green space”.

The Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors national parks will reopen many car parks and some public lavatories from this weekend. The Yorkshire Dales will be using a traffic light system to help visitors to identify how busy they are.

Sale Water Park, a 152-acre area of countryside and parkland in Greater Manchester, has reopened its car park, allowing visitors.

Jersey Zoo is allowing members to visit, with people asked to book online to secure an allocated time slot. A maximum of 500 visitors are permitted to enter each day.

Urggghhh the passive aggressive head tilters are our in force, it’s baffling how these people just shout down others and accuse them of not caring about other people. I spoke to my DM yesterday, she is very pragmatic and was completely on board with my DC going back to school, she absolutely can’t see why everything has got so hysterical either. Again anecdotal but she said that everyone in her social circle thought the same as her with the exception of a friend who is in the middle of chemo who for obvious reasons is vulnerable, the friend is being supported to stay at home and does not expect everyone else to do the same in order to protect her. There seems to be more people with common sense and personal responsibility IRL it seems.

Bollss · 16/05/2020 08:55

All this flower bombing going on is so fucking pathetic. Seemingly teachers can't actually use their words to explain why they might disagree with someone anymore. And also I keep seeing "if it's safe for kids to not social distance then we should be able to stop it all together" - from teachers. It worries me that people who don't have a basic understanding of this are teaching children.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 16/05/2020 08:55

@LivinLaVidaLoki I find stuff like that really unprofessional. If I started sounding off on Facebook about my workplace I'd probably face disciplinary action.

Orangeblossom78 · 16/05/2020 08:56

I know our schools both primary and secondary went into MATs in recent years I wasn't happy either until now.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 16/05/2020 08:56

@SpnBaby1967
People on my FB are almost strumming one out in delight that the R number has risen to 0.7-1.0.
Again at the briefing last night Jenny Harries explained multiple times that
A - that R number is not the current number
B - R is based on a lot of assumptions as well as new infection data. New infection is important when looking at the rate of infection in the community so the R is only one of many factors determining the lockdown.

So a rate of 1 isn't immediately "quick lock us up again!!"
Honestly it boils my piss that none of this stuff makes it into the media. They just pick whatever is going to terrify people more or get people more riled up and run with that.
