Hi everyone, i am new to Mumsnet so just finding my way around using it.

Come on here really to get advice and support.

I have 21 month old toddler, he is really a struggling with speech and gets very frustrated i have tried so many things but i seem to be having no luck. His starting to hit the naughty 2s as well and is having loads of tantrums but i think its linked to his speech and him not being able to tell me ??

Any advice is welcome

Contact your HV or GP, if they think there is a problem they can refer him for a hearing test/speech therapy.

In the meantime, just carry on speaking to him lots (clearly and slowly with lots of repetition of keys words). Read lots of books (repetitive ones are best). Sing songs (ones with actions and repetition e.g. row row row the boat).

Try to avoid background noise so have TV/radio off as much as possible.

Try and get him to look at you, come down to his level, make eye contact.

I remember being told to choose simple language and be consistent. Learning pronouns isn’t for ages (so me, my, mine things like that) so it’s best to choose a name and stick with that. So you would say “Tom’s ball” all the time, not “his red ball”.

Tv isn’t all bad CBeebies is ok, but actually watching a program, ideally together, not having stuff on in the background. Something like the news includes too many complicated words and they won’t learn anything.
