International Space Station visible again

DanFmDorking · 15/05/2020 17:35

The International Space Station is visible again from Fri 15th for the next 10 evenings.
Tonight should be particularly good as it's for 6 minutes

Fri May 15, 10:50 PM - 6 min - rising from the SW

Try these various links and/or select your own location.

NASA ISS Live Stream - Earth From Space
This one is quite interesting because if 'LIVE NOW' is at the top left it's LIVE. Otherwise, as the Space Station goes into night every 45 mins, the video stream is unavailable. During this time, and other breaks in transmission, recorded footage is shown. When it's back in daylight the live stream should start again.

Let's hope for clear skies - Good Luck!

Wow.

LokisLover · 19/05/2020 23:23

Thanks for this thread. I saw it really clearly this evening, surprised how quick it was. We must have looked funny stood in the middle of our street.

DanFmDorking · 19/05/2020 23:23

Yep, shookbelves it was a good sighting tonight.

Saw it! Took a big pair of binoculars out; Christ it moves quickly when you look at it with any kind of magnification.

shookbelves · 20/05/2020 15:21

Christ it moves quickly

I think it's about 17,000 mph Shock

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 20/05/2020 16:13

It's glorious today, totally clear skies. Fingers crossed for the same later, I was having so much fun spotting satellites last night.

DanFmDorking · 20/05/2020 21:44

Yes SirSamuel - clear skies

It's due twice tonight
Wed May 20, 10:04 PM - 6 min - rising from WSW
and
Wed May 20, 11:41 PM - 6 min - rising from W

i went out last night and saw it....I often nick out if my ISS app goes off.

...went out sunday and got as far as the doorstep, as it was absolutely pouring with rain, had not realised at all, usually it hammers against the windows, but it was very still but very rainy!

I might look out at ten but it's not in the least bit dark here just now, so not sure if I'll spot it.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 20/05/2020 21:51

ahhh...looks like we don't have the earlier pass this far north, so nevermind!

cissyandbessy · 20/05/2020 22:12

Was literally scrolling and saw your post at 10.04, went outside and there it was! Amazing to see in a clear dark blue sky. Thanks for the tip.

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 20/05/2020 22:28

What does it actually look like? Is it obvious?

DanFmDorking · 20/05/2020 22:36

cissy - glad you saw it

Magnolia - Yes, I would say it's obvious - It looks like a fast moving aircraft, seen as a steady - not blinking - white point of light. Typically it will be the brightest object in the sky (except for the moon). I hope this helps.
Try and see it at 11:41 tonight - Good Luck.

@LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow which app do you have please? I used to get the emails from NASA but then they stopped doing them Sad

Gotthetshirt23 · 20/05/2020 23:56

Too cloudy here though I don't know where to look!

DanFmDorking · 21/05/2020 00:07

Gotthetshirt23 - Go outside, your BACK to the NORTH, facing SOUTH (obviously). To your RIGHT is the WEST, your LEFT is to the EAST.
It should rise in the SOUTH WEST ish and race across the sky and set to the EAST.
(It’s bright enough to see through a thin layer of clouds and from horizon to horizon it should last a few minutes).

I wouldn't bother trying with any duration of one minute or less.

Don't bother with a telescope, the ISS is far too fast.
Your eyes are best (or even binoculars).

I saw it last night, so bright and fast.

Thanks OP Flowers

notchickenagain · 21/05/2020 13:30

Have been outside so many times and never seen it, I'm beginning to think it's all a fake! Grin I'll keep trying. Maybe I have my back to it as it streaks across the sky!

TeaForTara · 21/05/2020 13:44

I saw it last night for the first time. Note to self: next time WEAR YOUR DISTANCE GLASSES so it's not just a fuzzy blob and take a torch/phone out with me so I don't trip up the steps.

Is it visible tonight?

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 21/05/2020 14:31

@CurseryKinkajoo it's the ISS DETECTOR APP little blue square with a white ISS drawn over

It's free, but you can upgrade. Also for this app it says times in GMT which is worth remembering for a lot of apps, GMT= UTC which is mostly used for spacey type stuff, but if you set a notification it alarms at the right time iyswim
soooo..if you look and it says the ISS is going over at 10.04 pm then it means GMT but will notify you at 11.04 BST
for a while I thought it was going craycray! :o

CurseryKinkajoo · 21/05/2020 14:37

Fab, thank you

cyclingmad · 21/05/2020 14:49

@LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow

Thanks I got the app so if it says tonight itll be 10.53pm it really means 11.53 because we are on bst...is that right?

chomalungma · 21/05/2020 16:00

If you follow Virtual Astro on Twitter, they do updates on when it's visible.

Saw it last night. Best was when it appeared on Christmas Eve

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 21/05/2020 16:54

@cyclingmad YES! ... set it to notify you and it will alarm at the time you need to go out .

DanFmDorking · 21/05/2020 16:55

Due tonight at -
Thu May 21, 10:53 PM, 6 min, rising in the W
Unfortunately, my forecast area says partially cloudy Hmm

@notchickenagain - Please keep looking Smile - tonight it will be 6 minutes from horizon to horizon - Good luck.

@TeaForTara - yep - at 10:53pm

@cyclingmad - nope, 10:53pm BST or Mumsnet time or BBC time

Let's hope for clear skies
