My mum was washing my nappies when a new group called The Beatles came on the radio. She didn’t like the song and thought that with a ridiculous name like that they would never catch on.

I'm of an age when children's TV was half an hour at lunchtime (Watch with mother) and an hour in the evening (Blue Peter, Crackerjack). Free school milk in bottles. Could do a free school activity after school every day. Free university education, plus grant, plus travel expenses and could claim unemployment benefit during all vacations. Got a 100% mortgage aged 22 (could have borrowed 125%) and had tax relief on that. Only entitled to 6 weeks maternity pay at 90% but did spend 8 days in hospital post birth (usual was 5 or 6).

Beatles had their first number one. (Although that's arguable)
