How long are people going to clap?

I work for the NHS, clapped the first time was very emotional, all great. I don’t clap anymore more but just got me thinking how long is this supposed to go on? I genuinely thought it was just got one week.

For as long as social media is there for them to post it on, or until they have run out of ways to outdo each other.... so I’m guessing a while yet.

Local dickhead is 35 minutes into his self indulgent weekly karaoke session, but the fireworks at least seem to be missing this week thankfully. I’ve put my dogs in the garden to howl along to the awful karaoke...the dogs seem to like it at least. Before anyone moans, my dogs are usually pretty quiet.

NuffSaidSam · 14/05/2020 20:47

I think maybe until the end of lockdown?! Who knows. No-one wants to be the first on the street to stop. It's all very nice and friendly and social here though, so no problem with it.

MyNameWas · 14/05/2020 20:50

If it’s until lockdown, assuming that it is, since Boris is gradually coming off it shouldn’t the clappers do the same?...Gradually reduce the number of claps each week!

It’s lost it’s sentiment...it seems a bit childish now

We have never done it, not heard any neighbours doing it.

FourPlasticRings · 14/05/2020 20:53

Doesn't happen around here. Someone attempted it for 30 seconds last week and then went back inside.

Windyatthebeach · 14/05/2020 20:55

I have just driven past an address of someone I know.( Sanitary product emergency shop run) .
Parked outside were 3 cars.
I rang the ndn who I know well. Apparently evey week the relatives have been going round so they can all bang pans together!!.
Confused

WickedlyPetite · 14/05/2020 20:56

We've never done it, but I noticed earlier when I looked that there are significantly less people out doing it.

There is still some knobhead living somewhere near us who continues to murder a Beatles song each week via his PA system which presumably he sets up in his front garden - attention seeking twat.

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 14/05/2020 20:57

Until they stop showing Clap for Carers on BBC1. We did wonder this tonight though, in 50 years time at 8pm on a Thursday everyone will go to their front gardens and clap Grin

Kelvingrove · 14/05/2020 21:09

We live opposite a large Infirmary so lots of neighbours come out. I like the clapping but I was thinking tonight that it would be good to have an end point so that it does not drift on until one week it is just me out there. I wonder how there could be a rousing end where we all clap loudly for the last time. I think someone in the NHS will have to suggest it though. No politician would dare!

DrDavidBanner · 14/05/2020 21:16

We've got neighbours who've had their family over every week for the clap for carers 🤦

Sevencats · 14/05/2020 21:18

I’m sorry. But I hope it stops soon. Every week my cat comes flying through the door and hides under the bed being so scared.

BirdieFriendReturns · 14/05/2020 21:21

For 1000 years! Nobody will have any clue why they are clapping or what the NHS was.

grafittiartist · 14/05/2020 21:25

Should it not carry on as long as poor hospital staff and carers are having to deal with all this?

TheClitterati · 14/05/2020 21:25

I forgot tonight. But I did think it was Wednesday Grin

recycledteenager24 · 14/05/2020 21:27

in a few years time people will lookback on this and possibly think wtf were we doing ? cringe worthy of so many 'good ideas' in the past, wearing leg warmers, big hair, huge shoulder pads [akin to american footballers] you get the jest.

DrWAnker · 14/05/2020 21:28

Don't get me wrong, I do understand why folk are doing it.
However, I'd really like to open the window and shout shut the fuck up. 8pm I'm trying to get my kids to sleep, I do not want you banging pan lids under the bedroom window for 20 fucking minutes.
I'm supporting the NHS by staying home, following guidelines etc. I think they forget this will end but we'll still be neighbours.

I'm losing my patience with it tbh. Rant over.

majesticallyawkward · 14/05/2020 21:29

Not a single person did it on our street tonight. Even the dickheads opposite who have been sat blaring their car horns for the last 7 weeks didn't bother. Fireworks wanker only bothered for the first few:

I have seen people posting on social media at dead on 8 'I'm clapping' 🤦‍♀️ one woman posted in a local group that her son would be doing karaoke after the clap if anyone would like to come see him because he's amazing to head on down... what better way to celebrate the nhs by fucking off social distancing to watch a kid do a singalong 🙄

StillWeRise · 14/05/2020 21:29

I don't get all the negativity- it's such a tiny thing to do, no one cares if you don't, some people find it encouraging, it's nice to see your neighbours are still alive- what's the problem?
I do get the 'how long will it go on for?'- but I think somehow there will be an obvious point to stop

em90792 · 14/05/2020 21:31

When it rains...

Scarlettpixie · 14/05/2020 21:31

For as long as it takes.

I know people who work in the NHS and keyworkers Who appreciate it and that is good enough for me,

I had a hospital app today. I felt very apprehensive going. Everyone was lovely.

NameChange84 · 14/05/2020 21:33

Last week was one of the loudest. I was on a Zoom course and had to mute my microphone as it was very loud outside. We’ve had fireworks and everything.

This week...hardly anyone at all. I think it’s because people assume it’s almost all over Hmm.

FourPlasticRings · 14/05/2020 21:35

@graffitiartist It'd make more sense for everyone to donate £1 to the NHS every week. £52 a year per tax payer would be an extra £1,575,600,000 for the NHS. Could be earmarked as staff well-being money, to go towards things like PPE and on-call rooms, free car parking for staff and stuff. Might make it easier to deal with working within the NHS, not just during the CV-19 crisis but in general.

RunningNinja79 · 14/05/2020 21:35

When it rains.. Grin

Every week I see the facebook posts mentioning how good a turnout it was etc. Tonight it has been more, it was quiet tonight posts. So maybe its starting to come to a natural end.

bigchris · 14/05/2020 21:37

They do it live on sky news, BBC news and channel 4 news and the PM does it so I guess we carry on Sad
