How long are people going to clap?

I work for the NHS, clapped the first time was very emotional, all great. I don’t clap anymore more but just got me thinking how long is this supposed to go on? I genuinely thought it was just got one week.

I have stopped. Did it for the first couple of weeks but it has definitely gone stale in our street. Hardly anyone this week, judging by the lack of noise.

Every Thursday night on our local news and again on the One Show, there's usually an item about clapping or clapoers, with an introduction along the lines of "and, of course, once again tonight, we'll all be clapping for carers......" While that continues, it'll be harder for it to naturally peter out as I think it otherwise would.

peanutsandcream · 14/05/2020 21:44

I was surprised to see/hear more people than usual clapping on our street this evening. I don't do it every week. I have been hoping it will stop soon.

It's dying down in my town. Thank fuck.
The first time was nice and meaningful.
Now it's virtue signalling in the worst way

Dontknowhowtohelp1 · 14/05/2020 21:57

Anyone seen this Grin - very funny (not saying all streets are like this)

We had fireworks and flares here tonight! Next week who knows, bombs and machine guns?!

Guttersnipe · 14/05/2020 22:00

This week was the first week I didn't hear anything in our road.

MyNameWas · 14/05/2020 22:03

I don't want it to stop yet. I don't think it's just virtue signalling, I've not seen anybody posts about it on social media here since the first couple of weeks and yet the clapping tonight was loud as ever. Honestly, it's 2 minutes out of our week to think about people who are risking their everything, I'd like it to continue.

VisionQuest · 14/05/2020 22:08

It's been fairly rapturous around here over the past few weeks. However, tonight - nothing.

SquirtleSquad · 14/05/2020 22:09

@StillWeRise no one cares if you don't

Tell that to my wanky neighbour and her angry notes when I didn't do it but DH still did 'it's really not in the spirit of things for the whole household to not participate'

BirdieFriendReturns · 14/05/2020 22:11

If I got a passive aggressive note from a neighbour, I would tell them where to go!

SquirtleSquad · 14/05/2020 22:15

@BirdieFriendReturns I have done Grin

RoscoePColtrane · 14/05/2020 22:16

I stopped when people decided to start bashing the fuck out of kitchen equipment just to make as much noise as possible. That's not clapping to show respect, that's noise for the sake of it. They can crack on, my sedate clap was quite pathetic next to that.

StillWeRise · 14/05/2020 22:17

best thing to do with PA notes is ingore them
it will drive them mad

MinesAPintOfTea · 14/05/2020 22:17

I feel guilty every time I hear them stay, but not so much so that I want then to stop. Normally it starts about 2 mins after I've finished putting DS to bed, and therefore am not being touched and not working for the first time in 13 hours. I do not want to go out for more noise!

StillWeRise · 14/05/2020 22:18

ignore

Tiramisuiloveyou · 14/05/2020 22:20

More than ever out on our street there is a small group of housing for seniors at the top of our street we all clap and wave to them and one another its really nice to see people out for 5 minutes on a Thursday and wave to one another. Its lovely, we all know the NHS cant hear us but it brings the community together and is part of our lockdown traditions.

stopandListen · 14/05/2020 22:21

I don't clap anymore, my little girls used to love it, tonight when I asked if they wanted to go out to clap my 4yo said her hands hurt from all the hand washing (they both go to school so constantly washing / sanitising them) Smile

Hairydogmummy · 14/05/2020 22:24

Flipping fireworks on our road at 8pm last few Thursdays! And last Friday for the queen's speech. All courtesy of the new resident two doors down who's erected a huge flag poll with George cross flag in his garden. Needless to say the house is going on the market ASAP.

Keepingitschtum · 14/05/2020 22:25

I did it the first couple of weeks but have since stopped.

Keepingitschtum · 14/05/2020 22:26

I love our NHS but I'm sure me standing out on the deserted street clapping isn't helping them in any way

SoMuchToBits · 14/05/2020 22:26

In our road most people are out clapping, a few people bang things, I play Over the Rainbow on clarinet. I don't judge anyone who doesn't come out - it's their choice.

I did think the clarinet might annoy people, but the one week I was a bit late home from work, my neighbours said "We missed your music".

I work in the NHS frontline, so really appreciate the clapping etc and feel that our road really gets together (from a safe distance) over this. Smile

SquirtleSquad · 14/05/2020 22:27

I've just been invited to have a teddy bears picnic in the front garden next week for the NHS too.. crikey I might as well get a portaloo and a bed for the driveway the amount of time I'm expected to spend there.
