Had accident in car, what do I do?

Earlier on while parking I accidentally crashed into a car and some railings. I'm not sure how it happened except I think I was in Drive instead of reverse, started to hit the car in front, then swerved and hit some railings, which belong to the local council and are damaged.

The car did not seem to be too badly damaged and I could only see that a bit of the number plate had broken off. There was some damage to the railings. I call the police and they said that they would not be attending and if I couldn't move my car I would need to get it towed. They also said I should leave my details for the other driver, who wasn't there as the car was parked.

I believe I am meant to inform my insurance company, which I will do in the morning. I don't think my car is that badly damaged but I will get it checked over.

What should I do about the railings? Should I report it? I have told the police but should I tell the council? Will they make me pay for the damage?

I am quite new to driving so I've never had to deal with anything like this before.

I think DH will suggest that I don't report anything and hope for the best but I'm worried about doing that as it was totally my fault and if the other driver contacts their insurance it will be worse for me if I haven't reported it.

Has anyone ever damaged anything like this and what happened?

I probably wouldn’t do anything about the railings tbh.
If you left your details for the other car, then inform your insurance and wait and see if they claim.

If I inform my insurance and the other driver doesn't claim, will my premiums go up anyway?

If you tell your insurance then yes it will be logged as a fault claim.
If you dont tell them then the other driver will and they will contact you about it

I trust you left your details for the other driver

Yes I left my details for the other driver and with the police. I'll call the insurers in the morning and hope it's fairly straightforward.

It'll be really straightforward, don't worry. Tell your insurers about the railings and they will deal with any claim from the council if one is forthcoming.

I am probably going to get flamed for this

But if you left your details I would wait and see if they claim

If they do then just accept liability and say sorry you dudnt tell them

If they don't claim then your insurance don't need to know
