Would you apply for this promotion?

Temporary promotion has come up at work and it's just myself and one other person who can/would apply.

Reasons to apply:
It's a promotion
Look good on CV
Would put you ahead of other internal candidates if a permanent vacancy came up
Chance to put in place ideas that I know would work
I know the people I would line manage and they're lovely
It's £10k more a year

Reasons not to apply:
It would be very short term, probably 4 months only
You would be expected to continue your current workload as well as everything the promotion brings
Line management responsibility
You would be working closer with another department where the SLT are hard work/awkward/horrible
It's a very thankless role

I would really appreciate some external advice. Everything in lockdown becomes exaggerated and I am not sure I am thinking straight! Thank you so much.

I’d absolutely do it. Then when it comes up properly you’ll be ahead of the other one.

Aquamarine1029 · 13/05/2020 17:41

Depends on all the other factors in your life. Commute? Children? Husband?

fussygalore118 · 13/05/2020 17:46

Yup I'd do it! If you want to progress in that company thsts is

You'll never know whether you like it enough to want to apply for permanent position if you never try it

KurriKawari · 13/05/2020 17:58

Aquamarine1029 that is another consideration, am a single mother and normally thats not an issue but lockdown, full time work and home schooling is already proving stressful.

fussygalore118 I want to really make a career in my current organisation, I love the place!

Thank you this is so useful! I always talk myself out of stuff like this. I work hard n everyone praises my work, I need to have more confidence.

God yes. Errr why not. Sounds fab.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/05/2020 18:10

You would be expected to continue your current workload as well as everything the promotion brings

How is that possible? I take it they're not offering to pay you for both jobs?

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 13/05/2020 18:12

Yes I would, even if it's only temporary it is so much easier to get a permanent role with experience and it could be a while before an opportunity arises again with such a small number of possible applicants.

lachy · 13/05/2020 18:45

Go for it! Short term pain/long term gain. Gain all you can from the interview, and if you're successful, gain everything that you can from the role. It's all experience that you can use in the future.
