Does anyone recognise this type of nest? I’ve watched it being built for a few weeks now, and can hear babies, but I’ve never seen the bird that built it!

Anyone know what bird builds this nest?

Looks more like a rats nest?

AnduinsGirl · 13/05/2020 16:14

Jesus what is that? It's huge!! What noise are the babies making??

OculusThrift · 13/05/2020 16:15

I don't think thats a feathered animals nest.

@ANutAsBigAsABoulder don’t say that!!!!! We have a rat trap next to it, definitely not rats (we have chickens so have traps out all the time

I don’t know why but that picture gave me the creeps! I’ve got goosebumps!

BiarritzCrackers · 13/05/2020 16:17

How big actually is it?! Trying to use the light bulb for scale - about 8 or 9 light bulbs?

Buzzfrightyears · 13/05/2020 16:17

Jesus!! Is there anything in there? Feathers eggs etc?

TheQueensWave · 13/05/2020 16:17

@OculusThrift what do you mean? Please don’t say it’s rats! I’m sure it can’t be, we would be catching them in the trap which is near the nest?

That's huge!
Pterodactyl?

MattBerrysHair · 13/05/2020 16:18

Something from the corvid family I think. Maybe jackdaws.

LoseLooseLucy · 13/05/2020 16:19

.

Anyone know what bird builds this nest?
Soubriquet · 13/05/2020 16:19

That is a massive nest!!

Place marking cos I don’t have a clue

I hope it isn’t rats but I would have thought there would be feathers around if it was a bird

TheMandalorian · 13/05/2020 16:20

I'm no expert but assume something large.
Pigeon/ crow/ magpie/ owl/ squirrel.
How have you watched it being buit but not seen the animal?

Topseyt · 13/05/2020 16:20

That is bloody massive!! I don't know much about birds or their nests, but will be interested to know whether or not anyone can identify that.

TheQueensWave · 13/05/2020 16:21

If it’s rats I’m burning the place down! Its about 9foot tall I think? There’s mostly sheep’s wool and sticks. I’ve been avoiding getting too close but will check for feathers.

Mintjulia · 13/05/2020 16:22

Looks like a jackdaw’s nest. We cleared one out of our chimney and it was like a whole bonfire’s worth of sticks.

TheQueensWave · 13/05/2020 16:22

@TheMandalorian it’s in an outbuilding that the chickens use. We’ve tried watching but never saw anything coming in or out

OP posts:
Palila · 13/05/2020 16:22

When you say you’ve watched it being built . . . who was building it?

ShellsandSand · 13/05/2020 16:24

Oh. That's made me feel funny Confused

Littlepoppet1 · 13/05/2020 16:24

Oohh that is interesting! placemarking to find out what it is!

OculusThrift · 13/05/2020 16:25

I have to clue really, just the sheer size of it, and it going all the way up the wall.

TheQueensWave · 13/05/2020 16:26

@Palila it’s been been appearing, every morning we check and it’s bigger, and now there are babies in it, but we can’t see them because it’s so high. We’ve stood for ages and not seen anything going in or out

That's a very big nest in a very narrow room.

Not sure why a rat would build it either!

Is it ground floor? Can you see the exit? Look for feathers and poo. If it's a bird, they will have to fly in. If rats, odds on they come down to floor level. Bait box is a good idea.

Messy nests tend to be things like pigeons, plus big black birds (jackdaws etc). Am assuming there is not enough room for something really interesting to get in (eagles have messy nests tooGrin).

Soubriquet · 13/05/2020 16:30

Careful where you put the bait boxes

If it is a birds nest, you don’t want parent birds feeding poisoned rats/mice to their chicks
