Dh is spending a fortune on the weekly shop !!!!

It's always been DHs job to do the big shop as he says I'm shit at it and he knows what we need as he does all the cooking
But since lockdown he is going crazy . He's spending between £200-300 every week
There's only us and a small baby
I'm about to go onto statutory maternity pay soon!
Anyone else spending a lot more since lockdown ?

Oh god that's a lot of money, we're the same household as you just us and a baby and we spend £70 per week, I thought that was quite steep!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/05/2020 12:41

I'm spending more since lockdown but still only spending about £70-£80 a week. That's for me and 6yo DS. What is he buying? Shock

Gallacia · 13/05/2020 12:42

What is he buying and where is he shopping? I did spend a little bit more at the beginning of lockdown because of boredom and baking but cut back for the sake of my bank balance and my waistline

Unshriven · 13/05/2020 12:42

Are you saving money by not eating out, not having work lunches, takeaways etc?

We are spending more in supermarkets, but saving elsewhere.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 13/05/2020 12:43

So you’ve not seen a supermarket recently then?

Some brands aren’t available, stock is getting better but it’s not fully stocked yet. Sometimes buying a different brand costs more

Some things have gone up in price

Your also probably eating more at home now

Try and get an online slot and do the shop together at home? Or make a list, leave baby home and go shop for yourself to see if you can do better ? Any adult can shop with a list!

Comps83 · 13/05/2020 12:43

Isn't it
Luckily we aren't spending it on anything else
Obvs not eating out and not paying for petrol anymore etc but it's can't carry on like this
I know If I say anything I'll be told to go do it myself but apart from one trip to the doctors I haven't been anywhere since before lockdown apart from exercise and I feel a bit agoraphobic

I’m the same Blush spending just over 200 euro weekly for myself , dh and two small children ! I am cooking every day, in normal times we would eat out once a week and have a couple of pesto pasta days!

fleamadonna · 13/05/2020 12:44

Crikey. I’m waaaaay overspending on groceries since lockdown and I don’t spend that much in Waitrose for two adults and two snack obsessed children.

Comps83 · 13/05/2020 12:45

He reckons everything is available in the shops now
It's Lidl and aldi etc

OP posts:
lastqueenofscotland · 13/05/2020 12:45

That is a ridiculous amount of money!

lastqueenofscotland · 13/05/2020 12:46

What is he actually buying? My food shops are cheap as chips, it’s alcohol that can bump it up easily. You don’t need too many bottles of nicer wine for it to add £100

WitchWife · 13/05/2020 12:46

What was the most expensive thing in the last shop?
Can he shop in a different supermarket (i.e. not Waitrose if it's somewhere like that) where the basics are cheaper?
Is it food or booze?
Is food getting wasted?

Hiphopopotamus · 13/05/2020 12:46

We’re definitely spending more - probably about £120 a week for just my husband and I. Partly due to me feeling that I need to pick up ‘all the things’!! when I’m in the supermarket to avoid top up shops. We are saving on lunches out at work and things so I think in the long run we’re saving more than usual even with the shopping increase

homemadecommunistrussia · 13/05/2020 12:47

What!? How can he spend so much? Is it mostly booze?

Comps83 · 13/05/2020 12:47

I think a lot of it is alcohol yes. That'll be the most expensive thing

OP posts:
WitchWife · 13/05/2020 12:47

And yes that is LOADS, I'm amazed you've even got room to fit it in the house. That's like doing a massive christmas shop +++ every week.

Lllot5 · 13/05/2020 12:47

£300 in Aldi is astronomical. He must get bags and bags of it.
As you say it’s not being spent elsewhere but blimey.

LemonBreeland · 13/05/2020 12:47

I know shops don't have everything in stock at the minute but that is a ludicrous amount of money for a small family. Is he premium ready meals and alcohol only? I can't conceive how we would spend that much and we have 3 DC, including two teenagers who eat a lot.

He must be buying the absolutely most expensive of everything, and even then, are you eating it all?

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 13/05/2020 12:47

Fuck me I thought I was spending a lot as ours has crept up to £120 a week. There are five of us including two bottomless teenagers.

Is he going to a superstore and buying non food stuff as well?

P0lka · 13/05/2020 12:48

That is a lot of money - but even when things are in stock it's difficult to food shop at the minute. Shops have changed layouts, and I think changed special offers, there's a pressure to move on quickly, so you dont spend so long looking at the different options etc.

I'm probably spending double, but that's mostly balanced out by not getting takeaway coffees, lunchtime meal deals or top-up shops.

mynameiscalypso · 13/05/2020 12:48

We're spending a fortune; we're at home all the time, I entertain myself by cooking fancy recipes and we're drinking more than we would. I tend to buy nice meat / veg / grocery boxes rather than supermarkets though and am happy to oh a premium to support those businesses.

LemonBreeland · 13/05/2020 12:48

Just seen it's at Lidl and Aldi, that makes it even more incomprehensible to me. It must be a hell of a lot of alcohol.

Comps83 · 13/05/2020 12:49

It often doesn't fit . Have to play Tetris with the freezer
I think he's buying a lot of stuff we already have and is also buying novelty things that we wouldn't usually get
I have just thrown quite a bit of fruit and veg in the bin

OP posts:
Disfordarkchocolate · 13/05/2020 12:49

How can he spend that much! We're spending less than that and we do a top up shop in Waitrose, get a Mindful Chef delivery for 2 meals each and get milk and bread delivered.

I'd be worried he was gambling if you shop at Lidl/Aldi and spend that much for 3 people.

Sexnotgender · 13/05/2020 12:49

That’s a lot of money!

My spend has increased to around £120/£140 per week but that’s for 2 adults, a teenager and a toddler.

I couldn’t imagine spending over double thatConfused
