I want a new IPad. But the options are now confusing. What do I want?

I was made redundant but have new job so luckily have some cash in the bank. I have an ipad which I use all the time, but the memory is full up and it's starting to crash from time to time. I think it is about 4 or 5 years old. I want to treat myself to a new one, but am now confused by all the options!

I chose an iPad Air - for me it was between that and the Mini as both work with the Apple Pencil, and I wanted a larger screen size while still keeping it light. (A Pro was too high spec / budget for me.)

By the way I bought mine from John Lewis - they cost the same as Apple and Amazon but offer a two-year guarantee. Or you could look for a cheaper refurbished one on Apple or Amazon.

That said if the memory is full up you don’t necessarily need a new one at all - you might just need a clear out.

My old Mini lasted eight years so four seems short to me... I only stopped using it because it couldn’t update a lot of apps, it’s still working!

I've had a good clear out but have had problems with recent apps and battery etc and would just like a new one. I use it all the time and don't have a laptop.

I went for an iPad Pro, but I use it as a laptop replacement so it suits my needs

Firstly how much storage does your current iPad have and which one is it? Also what size is it, and are you looking for a smaller/larger device or the same size?

Have you used this? You can use the drop down menu to compare their products - including the old one you currently have www.apple.com/uk/ipad/compare/

It's an IPad Air 2 with 16gb. I think my phone has more memory these days.

All the current models are larger/heavier than youra. If this is a problem you might want the mini.

I think you should consider the £479 64GB iPad Air or the £449 128GB iPad. They also have £349 32GB iPad but I think you will still run into storage issues so no point. The iPad Air has better specs and is generally a better device.

The lineup is a bit messy at the moment. Fortunately you can skip the Pro entirely as it's a ridiculously OTT device.

The current iPad (£449 for 128gig) has more storage but is a bit slower and the screen a touch smaller than the iPad Air (£479 for 64gig; jumps to £629 for 256gig). But they're both excellent devices, and support the (older) pencil and various Apple case keyboards.

I'd go for the iPad at £449, iPad Air 64gig is a bit tight and £629 is a hell of a jump.

Ooh, this is helpful!

I’ve been having the same thoughts (mine is my second one and the screen is knackered and it is getting a bit unreliable). I was befuddled looking at all the different options so thank you!
