Online banking: large money transfer - left the sender account immediately but not reached receiver account?!

Having a bit of a panic - both accounts are mine. It left account 1 in seconds but 10 minutes later it's still not reached account 2. I've triple checked the sort code and account number and checked pending transactions but it's not there either. It's been at least 10 minutes. Is this normal... or should I be very worried??

Small money transfers have always been received instantly on the other side.

Are they transfers with the same bank?

mynameiscalypso · 12/05/2020 19:19

How big? It's probably got flagged as an unusual transaction.

HowdyBubble · 12/05/2020 19:19

Both accounts are from different banks by the way.

I had this a couple of weeks ago - sent a large sum ('000s) from our joint account to our savings account, and it still hadn't got there several hours later. Eventually arrived after about 24 hours, but gave me a scare!

Longdistance · 12/05/2020 19:19

It can take up to a few hours sometimes.

Check later.

HowdyBubble · 12/05/2020 19:20

A bit over 10k

RedDiamond · 12/05/2020 19:20

They say it can take up to 2 hours if going from one bank to another.

HowdyBubble · 12/05/2020 19:20

Thanks a lot for the reassurance - I'm glad no one has said it must arrive immediately. Just used to it being immediate as I've only ever transferred a few hundred at most in the past.

Over £10 k and it might be flagged for money laundering so they may be doing checks on it.

ChangeThePassword · 12/05/2020 19:21

Was it a FPS payment? The are usually immediate, but you are supposed to allow 2 hours. If its a large transaction it can take a bit longer.

If its not an FPS payment then it could be next working day.

ElephantLover · 12/05/2020 19:21

Could be slower between banks during non banking hours.

mynameiscalypso · 12/05/2020 19:22

Yeah £10k is one of the limits; they'll have red flagged it for that reason. It should be cleared fairly quickly in a couple of hours.

greyspottedgoose · 12/05/2020 19:23

My friend had this last week called me panicking, was a couple of thosand but it was about 15 minutes, it went in on the hour so we don't know of the accounts update hourly?

amazedmummy · 12/05/2020 19:27

Faster payments can take a few hours to go between accounts. If it's an unusually large payment especially if the money came into your account and was quickly transferred out it's perfectly possible the fraud team are having a quick look at it.

TheTroutofNoCraic · 12/05/2020 19:30

Large transfers after 5pm cut off usually don't appear til the next day, in my experience.

amusedbush · 12/05/2020 19:40

Whenever my mum sends me money it takes hours to arrive, sometimes the following day. Anyone else who has sent money to my account, regardless of bank, has arrived instantly. It’s weird.

HowdyBubble · 12/05/2020 21:44

Interesting. Thanks a lot everyone for your reassurances!

Dead2me · 12/05/2020 21:46

It can take a while, I moved 5,000 to another account this week, it took around 2 hours and smaller transfers are usually instant, I also had a slight panic but I googled and apparently it’s normal.

Lordfrontpaw · 12/05/2020 21:50

It can be ‘the next day’. I’ve just done similar and that’s what they told me when I spoke to them.

StartingGrid · 12/05/2020 22:06

If one of the banks is Barclays, I've experienced delays in reporting payments both in and out since the weekend.

HowdyBubble · 13/05/2020 00:48

Phew the transfer has now gone through :)

@StartingGrid yes one of the accounts was Barclays
