I think they WERE on a break

When Rachel speaks to Ross the next day she says “can I be your girlfriend again?”

This suggests she wasn’t his girlfriend at the time of speaking.

So if she wasn’t his girlfriend, Ross was single and allowed to sleep with whatever consenting adult he wished.

They were on a break!

In addition.... watching the whole thing back recently, I'm shocked but how the way the men treat and talk about women was okay back then

Heygirlheyboy · 11/05/2020 23:34

A commitment phobe but not a player with it.I think they worked..

Sparklingbrook · 11/05/2020 23:43

I just had a Google and I had forgotten that the dating student thing was further complicated by Rachel dating her father (Bruce Willis) so it was all a bit strange.

Undomesticgodde55 · 12/05/2020 03:44

Monica has to break up with Richard because he didn't want more children and couldn't giver her what she wanted. They wouldn't have worked long term.

I loved Monica with Chandler I thought they worked well together. I love it when they have one argument and Chandler thinks it's the end - then realised you don't break up after one argument and finally it's reviled why his relationships don't last.

Joeys creepy though I don't understand how he gets all the women. Just not attractive to be a f&@k boy.

WoeIsMee · 12/05/2020 06:05

She shagged Paolo knowing Ross liked her. AND dated Russ, Michael, Gavin, Joey AND even kissed Mark AND went on a date with him which proved that Ross had a right to worry about his/her motives even though she knew Ross loved her.

Shes a slut. Ross deserved better

What!!??
So just because she knew Ross liked her, she should have immediately become a nun just to save hurting his feelz!?

Ew. Is that you Ross?

Sparklingbrook · 12/05/2020 07:34

Around the time Chandler proposed didn’t Richard say he wouldhave children with Monica?

Disclaimer-I can’t believe lockdown has got me thinking about Friends. ShockGrin

Ninkanink · 12/05/2020 07:41

Wtaf she’s a slut for sleeping with various men whilst unattached, just because she knew Ross loved her?

Wtaf is wrong with you?? You are seriously messed up if you actually believe that.

Sparklingbrook · 12/05/2020 07:44

It’s only telly!

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 12/05/2020 07:51

I loved Monica and Chandler. So unexpected but it worked. Richard gets a free pass because Tom Selleck. But irl it would be creepy to date your friend's daughter.

Ninkanink · 12/05/2020 07:52

Of course it’s only telly. I don’t give a fuck what someone thinks of the behaviour of a fictional character in a tv series.

That’s not the point though...

People who believe ridiculous things like that believe it because of their world view, and their attitude towards women irl who dare to have sex with people they want to. It’s horribly misogynistic to think that a man should have some kind of automatic ownership of a woman’s heart, mind and body just because he fancies her/loves her/wants to sleep with her.

Sparklingbrook · 12/05/2020 07:54

I was a huge fan back in the day but watching now you do see it with a new eye so to speak.
On a similar note my favourite film as a teen St Elmo’s Fire is a totally different watch when you start to dissect it all as an adult.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 12/05/2020 07:55

This. Nobody in their right mind would choose immature man-child Chandler over sexy Richard

YES! totally agree. Richard was hot AF, chandler had all the maturity and wit of a 14 year old boy

ByzantinePrincess · 12/05/2020 07:56

Imagine if the sexes were reversed and a woman came on here saying ‘My DP has a woman at work who he’s very close to etc. She is attracted to him and would like to be together. We had an argument, speak on the phone later and I overhear that she’s round the house with him!’

LTB would be said many, many times!!

binkyboinky · 12/05/2020 07:58

On a break = a temporary hiatus while they sort out their problems and negotiate their changing situation (ie. Rachel getting a job). Rachel needed a bit of breathing space because Ross was being controlling and not allowing her to flourish in her new career. (Stupid man).

Break up = a permanent split and both parties are free

Ergo Ross is wrong and he cheated. And his constant shouting "We were on a bReAk"! is his admission that he cheated! So it doesn't make sense anyway.

It is all Ross's fault.

daisydaisydoodle · 12/05/2020 07:58

Break or no break it was awful to do such a thing!
Monica was sensible to break up with Richard. He didn't want children and she did.

AgnesNaismith · 12/05/2020 08:01

Slut shaming Rachel is not a good look.

Sparklingbrook · 12/05/2020 08:04

Have I got it wrong that Richard did a U turn about wanting children just before Monica and Chandler got engaged?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 12/05/2020 08:06

Monica should have stayed with Pete- loved Pete.

Love Rachel and Ross together- and no he was wrong, slept with another girl way too quickly.

TitianaTitsling · 12/05/2020 08:06

Shes a slut. Ross deserved better and should have had better boundaries and self respect. @Lostthewill80 that's a piss take isn't it?!! Sincerely hope so!!

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 12/05/2020 08:09

Even if they were on a break, Ross is still a vile, snivelling little creep with controlling tendencies who dated his own student. He's deeply unsexy, - a whiny man child who appears completely unable to take any responsibility for himself. He makes a list of horrible reasons not to date Rachael, he's jealous of her job/co workers, he says someone else's name at his own wedding, he's a shit parent who wont let his son play with a doll, and he snogged his best friend chandler's mum.

If anyone posted on here that their boyfriend did all these things they'd be told to go no contact immediately.

daisydaisydoodle · 12/05/2020 08:14

@Sparklingbrook he did a u turn even before Monica and Chandler got together. They broke up for a bit and then he said something like 'if you really want them I'll have them' but she said she only wanted kids with someone who genuinely wanted them so they stayed broke up. He did re-emerge when she took up with Chandler. I forget why

Sparklingbrook · 12/05/2020 08:16

Ah ok thanks @daisydaisydoodle, I thought it was something like that. I remembered something about Richard changing his mind.

Jent13c · 12/05/2020 08:17

I watched it as a teen and was rooting for ross and rachel in that last episode but went back as an adult and could barely watch Ross on screen. He was such a 'nice guy' who believed that he owned Rachel just because he fancied her. Then when they started going out he was so pathetic and jealous when she never gave him any reason to suspect her. He tried to screw up her career so many times and choose him over her job. She deserved much better.

Totally disagree about Monica and Chandler though..they were ace.

Littlepond · 12/05/2020 08:35

She should never have got off the plane

I love Monica and Chandler although Monica zooming over to Richard’s house when he pops up and says he still loves her, and she has to think about it? She and Chandler weren’t even on a break! She never got over Richard, never. I bet he popped up ten years later when Monica and Chandler were grumpy with each other about something and she slid into his DMs without looking back

Phoebe and David. David! Not Mike. That would have been such a lovely romantic story of love never dying despite the miles between them. I loved David. Mike proposed to Phoebe while he had a girlfriend! On his girlfriend’s birthday! Boo Mike.

OP posts:
daisydaisydoodle · 12/05/2020 08:39

Yes but Phoebe wasn't all that nice when you think about it. She was very selfish and sometimes cruel but hid it behind the 'cookie' character. Mike was probably a good match for her.
