Ideas for gifts from each decade?

Big birthday coming up in the summer for a very dear friend of the family, instead of individual gifts we are thinking about doing a 'gift through the decades' type thing. So something from the 30's, 40's, 50's and so on.

A book, item of clothing and good thing from each decade? Or baby toy, child toy, moving though the ages? Any ideas?

Male or female?

avroroad · 10/05/2020 11:22

Sorry Female- I don't know how I managed to miss that out!

I love that idea. I'm going to steal it.
The person I am going to do it for loves music, so I might get an album from each decade, on vinyl.

What a lovely idea.

Can you make a theme? As in the music idea above.

Food items? Sweeties? Books? Are they into fashions of the era? Old photos of their local area?

What's the budget?

RancidOldHag · 10/05/2020 11:32

How much do you want to spend each decade?

Breathmiller · 10/05/2020 11:34

Or yes, you could tie it in with what was going on for them that decade. A toy for the first one. Something to do with teensge years for the second - music or fashion- lipstick?
Then the decade they had children if they did. Something from their working life. Travel?

avroroad · 10/05/2020 11:38

It's a big family project so overall budget is quite high but personal budget is not so. To keep things affordable for all I'm thinking £20 limit of individual things. So if we went with the things of the decade according to her age One family would buy a food item, about her family a book and so on.

Old photo's are the only thing we won't be doing, we have done albums with these before.

40s - something from Imperial War museum shop?
50s - mini juke box

70s - set of clackers and one of those dipping duck thingies
80s - nouvelle cuisine cookbook no green goddess unitard

There are probably Royal event commemorative mugs etc from every decade. Or would those just be seen as clutter?

Or pare back to Silver Jubilee 70s, Golden 00s and Diamond 10s

Yes to clutter, although it's a good shout for at least one of the decade collections Grin

Gibsons make jigsaws for specific decades.

LockdownLoppy · 10/05/2020 14:34

Could you connect the item to a significant life event from that decade ie a special holiday in the 1950s represented by food/book/music.
