Are Fly curtains considered dangerous ??

Having been plagued by rogue flies all day while the kitchen door has been open I had a hankering over a retro fly curtain like my Nan had - all multi coloured strips hanging over the doorway. But then I vaguely remember them being condemned as a strangling risk ? And I haven’t ever seen one in people’s homes.
What do people do to discourage flies if I can’t have a fly curtain ? What on earth does everyone do that has the whole of the back open with bi fold doors ??? Share repelling secrets please !

A screen door?

MangoHat · 08/05/2020 19:09

It depends on if you have dc and how old they are. I’ve used sparkly bead curtains before, prettier than butcher’s tape types. But I wouldn’t have them with very small dc.

Like this www.amazon.co.uk/slp/beaded-curtains/5kyf4zd6cnc36x5?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

But you’d need a lot for a bifold door presumably

Thanks @MangoHat - I worded that in the wrong way - I don’t have a bifold door - more that I wondered if I have a problem with a single door - what do they do with a wide open space !

DC ages are 5 - 10 - too young for beaded curtain ?

We've used a plastic strip curtain but on a springy hook so you can't get any tension on it. And a mesh screen fixed at the edges but with a magnetic opening down the middle.

Magnet fixings seem a good idea - I’ll have a google. Thanks @picklemewalnuts

Oh this post has brought back memories of visiting my mums friend who had the multi coloured stripes at her back door. I loved tangling myself up in them.

Likethebattle · 08/05/2020 19:22

The penny trick, fill up a sandwich bag of water and put a few copper pennies in it and hang in the doorway. Some people say it works.

musicinspring1 · 08/05/2020 19:32

@Likethebattle I’m game for trying that!
@picklemewalnuts 😂 If it works I don’t care how pretty it is !

I don’t think 5 is too young? 10 certainly isn’t! I used to tie mine to the sides if not in use.
