A question about wills and executors

I'm wondering, if you are the named executors of the Will and you decide to sort out the estate without a solicitor, who actually knows you are the executor and it's ok for you to close accounts and take money, or sell a house? My DH and his brother are joint executors and my bil doesn't want to pay a solicitor and it's got me thinking about the legalities. Is the Will supposed to go somewhere official? I'm a bit worried about not using a solicitor. My bil is a miser and won't spend a penny on anything.

You will need to do an I inheritance tax form and probate most likely.

I've never used a solicitor. I've had to prove my identity, used the will and death certificates. For many estates it's a slog but not difficult. The last time I was executor, last year, I was able to upload some documents to some institutions but had to go into others.

Also, I had to send the original will in order to get probate.
