Vitamin D - levels and sources?

I know there are a few threads on Vit D and I have searched them, but not found the info that I am looking for. Apologies for any duplication.

Vit D deficiency has been linked to many things over the past few years but now seems quite an urgent thing to address. The thing is, it is not clear how much and how we should be talking it. I believe it is not a water soluble vitamin and so you have to be careful about how much you are taking.

Does anyone know how much an adult or child should be taking a day? What if you already take a supplement e.g. mine says 25 ug (micrograms) and not sure how this compares with what I should be taking.

What about sunlight, getting Vit D from food. How much sunlight should be getting.

It is all very well and good saying people are faring worse due to Vit D levels but not many people are very clear on what we should be doing about it!

My GP told me 20-25 mcg every day September - April. That was after a high dosage of 40,000 units a week for 7 weeks as I had low levels.
