Should NHS staff go ahead in queues?

JustOneLastThing · 07/05/2020 23:03

I have only done it once, and got some evil looks from the others queuing. It was my only day off and was knackered and needed some essentials so thought 'just this once'-might not do it again!
It sort of felt like all the clapping in the world and rainbows doesn't mean much in the real world, but I might be a bit more careful about waving my lanyard around in the future (and yes, i'm frontline ward NHS staff working on covid wards fwiw).
Any thoughts from others very welcome.

Absolutely and don't be ashamed to do it. We get zero other perks!

You don't have a Blue Light card then? You should get one.

30daysoflight · 08/05/2020 08:19

You should absolutely go to the front of the queue along with all front line NHS and carers.
Do not feel guilty. Where would we be without you?
Anyone who begrudes this is an entitled bumhole.

HouseOfSticks · 08/05/2020 08:21

It should be all keyworkers or no keyworkers.

Samcro · 08/05/2020 08:23

no a queue is just that.

Sandybval · 08/05/2020 08:25

Carers shopping for others should, quite often shopping is what adds time above and beyond their workday anyway, let alone having to queue. Personally I am not bothered if someone in the NHS goes straight into the shop, but people do often seem to forget that many others work long hours in jobs that are scarier than they were a few months back, and probably don't want to spend ages queueing either. Trouble is, if it was extended to all keyworkers then the actual queue would take ages!

ExclamationPerfume · 08/05/2020 08:28

My friend works for a major supermarket. She said some of the NHS staff have been absolutely horrible to the supermarket staff. Obviously not all of them but she has been in tears more than once.

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 08/05/2020 08:33

DH is a front line/essential worker, is on, 'emergency roster,' meaning no breaks during 12 shifts.

We were out of food, and he asked to join the NHS workers in their shop after a night turn, and was refused. He did show his letter saying he was an essential worker btw.

Lots of people are doing essential work, and don't agree with priority, although think the vulnerable should be for delivery slots.

ItsAllForYou · 08/05/2020 08:35

Yes of course you should. I will be doing it later with my NHS ID badge.

Pinkyyy · 08/05/2020 08:37

No, this really pisses me off. I guarantee the actual front line workers are not even the ones doing it.

HMSSophie · 08/05/2020 08:38

Gods teeth what a bunch of selfish animals we humans are. Clapping - feels nice to do and doesn't cost me and lets me feel like a good person.

As soon as there's any danger of supporting the NHS staff in a way that might have an effect on us - not voting Tory, or waiting a little longer in a queue for example - and it's "hell no, the cheeky entitled fuckers".

I despair of people. I honestly do.

Soz forgot about the 10% off at Levi's. 😂😝

drinkingwineoutofamug · 08/05/2020 08:40

Yes. Frontline here , I work on a covid ward. Do you want me next to you in a line.
PP saying they get take away etc sent to your place of work. Lucky for you , we don't.
We have minimal ppe. And as a majority blame nhs for spreading covid, apparently there's a dedicated Facebook page about this.
I'm doing it to protect you.
If you don't agree , don't clap.
Sorry but in a grumpy mood

Pinkyyy · 08/05/2020 08:41

@HMSSophie not everyone. I don't clap and I did vote Tory.

SpratsOnParade · 08/05/2020 08:41

😂😝

There's a lot better perks than that.

MajesticWhine · 08/05/2020 08:44

I didn't know this was a thing. I am an NHS worker and I wouldn't do it.

Gizlotsmum · 08/05/2020 08:45

Meh. I don't have an issue with this but I am able to queue and wfh flexibly to pick a better time to do so. . I do feel sorry for some of the guys I work with (key workers not NHS) working full days and not getting any priority hours for their shopping, they are screwed if they forget their lunch and have to join a queue. Yes some people will take the mick... but better that than already exhausted nurses and Dr's get refused.

SpratsOnParade · 08/05/2020 08:46

Do not feel guilty. Where would we be without you?

Where would we be without a lot of people? Cleaners, supermarket staff, delivery drivers, porters, factory workers, mechanics, admin for essential services, vets, farmers, charity workers, CAB advisors, carers, support workers, police, fire brigade, teachers etc. The list goes on.

Spied · 08/05/2020 08:47

Yesterday at Sainsburys. Man walks up to the front of the queue and flashes his firefighter card/ID.
The guy spends everyday at the gym. Works one day a week. (I know the family).
He honestly thought he was fucking God's gift as he removed his shades and waltzed in.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 08/05/2020 08:48

No, they shouldn't. Theres an awful lot of people working incredibly hard in essential roles at the moment. I'm classed as a key worker but I'm quiet so I don't mean me.

There seems to have become a bit of a cult around the NHS at the moment. We all need each other to function. It's wrong to single out one section of society as being more worthy.

My DM works as a funeral director. She came into contact with a confirmed covid case yesterday. She will be standing in the queue for however long it takes later today. My DF can't do the shopping as he's high risk but not high risk enough for deliveries. I live too far away.

Afonavon · 08/05/2020 08:55

Yes, I don’t clap the NHS. I would gladly let you jump the queue. I will also not vote Tory , that’s what we need to de to help long term!

We in the NHS don't get 'perks'? In addition to the blue light card and the NHS discounts site, the above is COVID specific NHS 'perks'.

Bargainhuntbore · 08/05/2020 09:01

I disagree with this type of special treatment. I went shopping to Morrisons yesterday evening and the cashier asked if I worked for the NHS to get a discount.

Why a special discount for an NHS care assistant with her/his card and not for the council care assistant with her/his vectis card (which all council employees have including me)?

Wrong.

Tonz · 08/05/2020 09:04

Just because I don't agree with nhs jumping queues on their day off doesn't mean Im a tory voter what a stupid thing to say.
Before after or during a shift by all means jump any queue they want but on a day off then no. Like someone else said nobody knows anyone else's story. In the shop I work in we have carers in and out all day shopping for others not themselves during their working hours and they have to queue

AnnaMagnani · 08/05/2020 09:08

I've done it at Waitrose. Didn't feel bad as I have a hidden disability which means I'd find standing in the queue difficult - I'd probably faint by the time I got to the front.

So I'm delighted about it. Also DH is disabled so can't do the shopping for me.

Mainly I've been going to the Sainsbury's crack of dawn hour.

Both have been complete lifesavers in this house. Totally appreciate there are many other essential workers who aren't NHS, but I've been very grateful for what the shops have done.

897654321abcvrufhfgg · 08/05/2020 09:09

Yes if you are frontline. However in my local tesco an nhs worker was given priority access to some stock that wasn’t on the shelves yet. I asked for some flour too and was told “ no it’s just because she is NHS” the customer admitted she was admin at doctors surgery with no patient contact. I am teaching support in a school coming in close contact with frontline staff kids every other day. It pissedme off to be honest as my risk is much higher than hers.
