Should NHS staff go ahead in queues?

JustOneLastThing · 07/05/2020 23:03

I have only done it once, and got some evil looks from the others queuing. It was my only day off and was knackered and needed some essentials so thought 'just this once'-might not do it again!
It sort of felt like all the clapping in the world and rainbows doesn't mean much in the real world, but I might be a bit more careful about waving my lanyard around in the future (and yes, i'm frontline ward NHS staff working on covid wards fwiw).
Any thoughts from others very welcome.

These threads are best avoided, people love having. go at the thought of nhs staff getting half price coffees for some petty reason. It's normally the same posters.
Don't feel sad.

BruceWilllis · 09/05/2020 23:31

I'm NHS also. I'd never dream of jumping the queue. The NHS shopping hour is fine, though I've not used that either but know my colleagues have done. I go to large supermarkets anf have found the queues move quite quickly anyway. Any other bits I get delivered from local farm shops. Lots of other people are keyworkers/its their only day off etc. My husband is also a keyworker, he works longer hours than me, at just as much risk, he doesn't get to queue jump.

Why should a neuro surgeon get half priced coffee?

stayclosetoyourself · 09/05/2020 23:56

Overworked - charming. I disagreed with you actually.
You slated your own colleagues for being greedy and are ashamed of your profession. I and others disagreed. Not my experience. You don't even appear to support the nhs.

stayclosetoyourself · 09/05/2020 23:58

It started after a nurse posted a video online crying at empty shelves after a night shift when people had been panic buying.

overworkedandstressed · 10/05/2020 00:04

I was ashamed of my own colleagues in the hospital I work in because of a tik tok video they made on work hours yes I was and still am. Are you going at me like a vulture now for something I said 24 hours ago?

stayclosetoyourself · 10/05/2020 00:14

You told me to F off - that's not ok is it?

You had a big rant about your own colleagues, insisted there was no work in hospitals and that patients not being admitted early enough to save lives was somehow related to this. But no one can disagree with your sweeping generalisations?

overworkedandstressed · 10/05/2020 00:21

It was warrented. You have the people skills of a cheese slice.
Yes I did I spoke about the colleagues behaviour at the hospital I work in not nhs nurses in general. I said it was quiet just now where I work but we had been busy.
I also said that patients not getting to hospital until they were seriously I'll contributed to the death rate. Yep I still think the same.
I also acknowledged this was government advice not nhs management.
Anyone can disagree on my opinions I thought that was the whole point of being on here

overworkedandstressed · 10/05/2020 00:23

And was also very upset last night like I'm sure I explained. I hated the world and everyone in it. My head is so much clearer today

stayclosetoyourself · 10/05/2020 00:26

No I didn't read that you were upset last night. That might explain your comments more. But your comments made the nhs look very poor and I have to say that's not fair and not my experience.

Tonz · 10/05/2020 00:34

She was upset and worrying about her sister who works in a care home who after pulling double shifts cried herself to sleep at night and had no PPE.

overworkedandstressed · 10/05/2020 00:42

I was replying to someone who said queue jumping was the least society owed us by saying society is helping us enough by staying home losing jobs kids no school Government slogan was stay home protect the nhs and people have and we are coping. Thank God that slogan is to be dropped now.
Nurses in the hospital I work in have been doing some things I find embarrassing to my profession that is my opinion and u just tried to drag it on and on and on

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 10/05/2020 01:20

Tell you sister to look online at the online store that is the name of a jungle
Also medical suppliers online have PPE
Cost about £40 I think 100 gloves and 50 masks (helped look for my friend who wants to wear them when on the tube)

It is about if you look online. We didn’t have adequate PPE it was awful.

Amanduh · 10/05/2020 01:31

The problem is with ‘nhs staff.’
My dr’s receptionists does it, gets all the perks and freebies, goes on about how noble she is, thanks people for clapping etc.
She works 4 hours a week on the reception desk!

overworkedandstressed · 10/05/2020 01:38

She has ordered some online they're just taking forever to come.
She's always constantly told by her boss they will be supplied but they never appear. Id be terrified to go on the tube without a mask

Bertoldbrecht · 10/05/2020 07:29

Lol what are the perks and freebies Confused and she feels noble ?

Pomegranatepompom · 10/05/2020 08:11

@MintyMabel but why does it bother you? The coffee chain is still getting a profit. I can’t imagine many people are trying to find an open coffee shop to take advantage of the offer.

bloodyhellsbellsx · 10/05/2020 08:20

The only useful NHS discount I’ve found is Nando’s which has been around years! Student discount on the other hand is amazing, if you do any university accredited further learning you get access to UNiDAYS. Top tip for you all, I still have mine from doing my prescribing, although I’m sure someone will be along to say I shouldn’t be allowed use it Grin

Pomegranatepompom · 10/05/2020 08:41

Honestly I don’t think most people have asked for anything or are getting anything. It’s not expected.
Oh I did get an Easter egg but there was a long thread on that, people also not happy about eggs being donated.

bloodyhellsbellsx · 10/05/2020 09:02

I think it’s really pathetic that some people are so bitter they would begrudge someone getting a free Easter egg or half price coffee. How sad must their lives be for little things like that to bother them enough to post online about it 🙄

Pomegranatepompom · 10/05/2020 09:15

People don’t like other people getting things they’re not ...
I think good marketing technique, probably increases profits.

stayclosetoyourself · 10/05/2020 09:26

Usually we talk about ' frontline clinical staff ' inside a hospital to be AE doctors and nurses dealing with direct patient care acute medicine , anaesthetics/ critical care and other acute admitting on call specialities like paeds and surgery.

In the crisis it's used more for those working regularly in the covid teams. The highest risk is procedures and cardiac arrests. But as the hospitals have been turned over to covid and cases pop up everywhere it's more blurred.

Those not dealing with direct patient care in acute areas and wards would not be described as frontline.
Shop workers and builders, bank workers food chain providers etc are key workers.

Think the govt hyperbole is to make it sound like war speech.

MintyMabel · 10/05/2020 11:13

but why does it bother you? The coffee chain is still getting a profit. I can’t imagine many people are trying to find an open coffee shop to take advantage of the offer.

It sends a message that the highly paid neurosurgeon is more deserving of free coffee than the low paid supermarket worker or care assistant, simply because of who employs them, despite the fact they are out there putting themselves at risk too.

Every single place which sells coffee round our way is doing it, not hard to find at all.

MintyMabel · 10/05/2020 11:15

I think good marketing technique, probably increases profits.

It’s the same kind of virtue signalling as banning plastic straws - most often done whilst making no other effort at all to be environmentally friendly.

Pomegranatepompom · 10/05/2020 11:19

If someone hits their lunch while getting the coffee - it’s helping to keep the business afloat.

On 1 coffee shop open near where I work.
Absolutely agree other key workers are putting themselves at risk and should also be entitled to coffee etc. We did redistribute products to care homes.
