On my face book page, the little messenger icon says I have a message, I don’t, what does it mean?

Rubbish at Facebook kind of stuff, but on the message icon there’s a “red 1” message.
I’ve clicked on, gone through and there are absolutely no unread messages.
I’ve refreshed the page over and over and it doesn’t go.
Is there another place where messages can go within messages?

It does this all the time, also says you've got unread notifications when you haven't. I usually log out and back in and they disappear

Check your message requests just in case. But I think it’s a glitch because there’s no unread message for me.

Message request maybe?
Someone reacted to a video or comment you sent. It alerts as a new message, but it's not always obvious.
Or, if you are using the app, it could just be an error. I sometimes get that, and there is nothing new on my messenger app, but when I sign in to Facebook using chrome or safari and check my messages, it is showing my last message as unread.
