I recently discovered hello fresh and it has been a god send in the current climate. I not only have nice food, but also an activity in he evening (I’m not a natural cook!).

It is expensive though and once the shops return to normal it will be a treat rather than a weekly regular.

But can I ask people ho use it, do you eventually get bored with the choices. And did you ever get the free meal box to send to a friend😊.

Thanks in advance

Nah, it's over priced and terrible quality.
i like to know that my food is prepared with the best ingredients.
Take the costs away, you aren't getting quality, it's just pre packed with a lot of business overheads.
Cooking your own is far healthier for your families.
But, some like to eat over priced crap than cook themselves, I suppose it depends on your values.

listsandbudgets · 08/05/2020 14:48

Devlesko have you had any of these boxes.. Hello Fresh, Gusto etc..?

I'm just wondering if not what you actually think is in them. It's certainly not all 'pre packed" or "overpriced crap" (sometimes I admit perhaps a bit overpriced but certainly not crap)

Itwasntme1 · 08/05/2020 14:57

@Devlesko what a helpful contribution to the discussion😂

Can I ask what you mean by healthier - I get the price comment, but why is it far healthier ‘cooking your own’ and what do actually mean by that?

@DevleskoAnd I also have to ask - what on earth does the comment about people’s values mean?

Do you understand we are talking about a box full of vegetables, meat and condiments that you then cook your self?

Are you really questioning the values of people who Oder these😂. I assume you must have ordered the box Yourself to be able to comment on the quality and nutrition of the ingredients.

Gousto has been a game changer in lockdown. I started it a month before using the offer code , think I saw it on here. Was great value and was planning on pausing the plan and just using it occasionally once offer ended. Then coronagate erupted and have kept it on.
Yes it's cheaper to buy it yourself but knowing we had four nice meals a week without the stress of shopping has made all the difference.
They have been so good throughout , deliveries on time etc. Had one substitute which was a different type of stock cube Smileotherwise all as promised.
This week the dry ingredients are in separate bags which is a help but with adult offspring at home helping to cook, the gousto box rummage was a way to pass time !

We use Hello Fresh and like it. We tried Gusto once but found the kids didn’t like the meals. We get a Hello Fresh box of 4 meals for 4 people and there is always leftovers so lasts the full week. We don’t get a box every week though.

Itwasntme1 · 08/05/2020 20:50

I have had two glasses of wine, so am obsessing. But really disappointed @Devlesko hasn’t come back to explain why hello fresh is unhealthy.

Tonight I cooked cod with seaseme seed, diced two potatoes and had red onion, plum tomatoes and samphire. Nothing came preprepared and it was 300 calories. I thought it was pretty healthy??

Please come back and explain😊😊😊

I used Hello Fresh for about 5 months when we had DC1. It made life so much easier, but I found a was spending more money doing the food shop.
I collated the recipe cards in a folder and now meal plan from them. I also still have access to the app and look for new recipes on there every so often.
We only stopped because it didn't work out cost effective.
Now 7 of their dinners for 2 works out about the same price as their 5 meals for 2 box.

bettybattenburg · 08/05/2020 20:57

I like HF but am much less keen now they have stopped doing the brown paper bags for each meal - so handy to grab a bag, empty it out and then cook and pop any rubbish in the bag ready for the bin.

We are going to keep going with it after lockdown ends as the quality of our diet has increased massively.

We want the bags back though!

Itwasntme1 · 08/05/2020 20:58

That’s what I hope to do do cheesy😊. It is really helping in lock down because shopping is so tough. A box full of all the ingredients for evening meals is a godsend, I even add a bottle of wine, desert and bunch😂.

I reason I am saving money on Starbucks and eating out. But it will have to stop once lock down is over - or at least become less regular.

@bettybattenburg They’ve gone back to the paper bags again.

Iorderedyouapancake · 09/05/2020 08:58

Another one waiting for @Devlesko to explain why ingredients are so much healthier when you buy them in a shop instead of having them delivered in a box (and also what why what I do with those ingredients isn’t cooking) 😄

bettybattenburg · 09/05/2020 09:44

@Boxachocs @bettybattenburg They’ve gone back to the paper bags again.

Excellent. I'm not sure if it's because of lockdown or because I am a sad git (or both!) but that's made me happy this morning Biscuit - for me!

Boxachocs · 09/05/2020 09:56

😂

Itwasntme1 · 09/05/2020 09:58

I am so excited that the bags are bag. I got his weeks box and Thursday and no numbered bags. Fingers crossed for next week.

OP posts:
bettybattenburg · 09/05/2020 09:59

We had no bags last week but our delivery is coming today, I hope it's with bags.

I hadn't heard that they had gone back to them, was that a quick response to customer feedback?

Itwasntme1 · 09/05/2020 13:17

Cooking my first brunch! Scrambled eggs, mushroom, kale and crumpets.

Sad the brunch option is only temporary

I hope you like them more than we did Itwasntme1 !

Nomally their meals are lovely but we were very disappointed with that one.

listsandbudgets · 09/05/2020 13:55

My first HF is coming on Wednesday. Hope they have bags, that's one of the thi gs that made me decide to try them!!

Itwasntme1 · 09/05/2020 15:11

Betty agree brunch wasn’t great

No bags today!

EnglishGirlApproximately · 09/05/2020 20:40

Like a PP I've looked at these but opted for trying Simply Cook instead, so just getting the spice mixes and seasoning and buying your own fresh ingredients. Its working really well for us and we've had some great meals. I like not having any urgency to use them in a certain timeframe as everything keeps in a cupboard, so we have a lot of flexibility on our meal plan still. I'm a good cook and pretty adventurous generally but often end up throwing out spices as I might only use a teaspoon for a recipe then not need it again for months, so having them measured out in portion sizes is pretty cost effective for us.

Zippea · 09/05/2020 20:48

We’ve just had our first week and the week started well. The children cooked two meals and I cooked the third. Despite storing correctly, I needed to replace a pepper, a carrot was manky and I had mouldy cheese. I did complain and received a partial refund for that meal and can not fault their customer service. I probably will get another box and see how it goes, it is costly so wanted to try then for when DH is away with work and it would just be me and the children. It appealed as am disabled and had everything I needed.

Sunshineandflipflops · 09/05/2020 21:11

Hi, I have a HF question... I tried for the first time today and went for the £30 family box but when I chose my meals, it showed a total
Price which was higher than that. Will I still
be charged the £30? (I had a 50% discount so actually it should be £15).
