Extra pizza delivery box

So last night I ordered two for one pizza and three boxes arrived (one empty). At first I thought I'd messed up the order as I'd be having
trouble ordering from my phone and DC kept changing their minds about which topping and crust they wanted. But no, the box was empty with my name and "misc" on the sticker.

Having Googled apparently it's what happens with door step deliveries now, but I also read you're supposed to leave to empty box for the delivery person to take away Confused. Have I committed some novice takeaway delivery faux pas?

I thought I’d got a freebie but it’s just to keep your food off the ground.

since they're being left on the floor at the door we assumed it was so our boxes weren't on the cold potentially damp floor. Also our driver waved and drove off so clearly wasn't expecting to collect the plain empty box.

I would have thought the extra box was to leave a tip or payment for the pizza in? (Obviously if not paid online beforehand) Confused

This all sounds a bit complex.

When I order a takeaway I leave a large bag on my doorstep with an envelope which contains the driver's tip. They place food in bag, take tip, ring doorbell and are on their way by the time I get to the front door.

@RainMustFall You're obviously takeaway pro. We order a pizza delivery so rarely that I always get over excited and along with teen DD we race to the door giggling.

I shall get a special bag for my takeaway deliveries form now on!
