Anyone from Ripon?

I’m looking for some advice on moving to Ripon. We lived in the area a few years ago and now have decided that we’d like to settle in North Yorkshire. We liked Ripon and it is handy for my husband’s work.
I only know the centre and don’t know about the residential areas.
Are there any areas we should avoid when looking at houses?
Also, there are a lot of
“Good” primary schools, but are there any we should avoid or that are recommended?
Any advice is welcome. As soon as lock down is over we will be trying to get up there to explore and view some houses, but I’d like to get prepared!

There are some lovely villages close to Ripon, or are you looking to live in Ripon itself?

I’d like to be in Ripon as I’d like to be walking distance to shops/activities/school. But a big village would be ok. Like Bedale, but not so far up! Any suggestions?

Namechanged for this! I live in Ripon and have lived here for all my adult life; I also went to school here as a teen.

The nicest part IMO is the west - Clotherholme Road/Bishopton/Ash Bank Road/Kirkby Lane, with the dodgy bits being Lead Lane and Bondgate Green way.

The 'best' primary schools are St Wilfrid's (but that's Catholic if that matters to you), the Cathedral school and Holy Trinity, but they're all fine! Depends what you're looking for really. If your kids have any SEN I really really rate Holy Trinity; I think their pastoral team are amazing.

Ask away if you have more questions!

Thanks for that, that’s really helpful. I have seen a nice house on Knaresborough Rd but I’m guessing that’s not an ideal location? Although it’s handy for commuting.
I will look more closely at those areas you mentioned.

I wouldn't rule out Knaresborough Road (but I don't know it very well) – each street has such a different feel, and it might just be out of the way enough from Bondgate Green/Bondgate Green Lane to be absolutely fine! Quarry Moor Lane is quite nice.

Ripon's generally a pretty nice city to be honest, the worst parts are still better than you'd find in most other cities!
