Where do you store suitcases etc?

We moved house at the start of the year and we have some work to do over time. I have used some of my time during lock-down, now that we have settled in, to try to work out what we need/want to get done.

In our last house we had some decent sized cupboards in the eaves in the spare bedroom where we kept suitcases and large bags. In the new house they are just sitting in the spare bedroom for now (which is not being used as we cant have visitors, but will get a reasonable amount of use in due course so need a better place to keep them so they don't get in guests' way). I am trying to figure out best storage options for them.

I am interested to know where others keep large items like cases, not just location but also type of cupboard etc. We do not have an attic, although do have a garage for the first time (but currently no suitable cupboards in there). So main options are to get some cupboards in the garage or spare bedroom, or not bother with cupboards and just leave them sitting in the garage.

What do others do?

mine have always lived on top of the wardrobe. I want to get built in wardrobes when we redo our house later this year, and will ensure we have a big enough shelf section at the top for the suitcases to be stored there.

SunshineDays2019 · 04/05/2020 16:38

We use the attic. In your circumstances, I would get storage cupboards in the garage.

MaggieFS · 04/05/2020 16:49

Loft. In your case I would sort out some decent storage for the garage before it becomes a disordered dumping ground!

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 04/05/2020 16:52

Soft bags, sponge bags and small overnight bags have a dedicated cupboard in fitted wardrobes in the master bedroom. All the hard cases are kept outside in the bike shed.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 04/05/2020 16:53

Hard cases? Hardshell cases obviously. I don’t have Ross Kemp locked up in Britain’s hardest bike shed. 🙄

WhyOhWine · 04/05/2020 17:55

yes 3 hard shell cases as well as some softer ones and some holdalls. Holdalls are obviously easier as they can fold up, but would prefer to keep them all together.

We are getting built in wardrobes in our bedroom, so high shelves in there sounds like another possible option. I am a bit worried about the garage becoming a dumping group (particularly if it turns out I have inherited any genes from my dad), and also whether things will get a bit damp and dusty in there.

SO where to get off the shelf garage storage big enough for suitcases?

I just have mine in the garage piled on top of each other (3 hard cases) just give them a wipe down and an air a day or two before I need to start packing - which would have been in 3 weeks time. 😪

Bottom of wardrobes. We have big wardrobes

lifestooshort123 · 04/05/2020 18:28

Ours are all duffel or wheelie bags and most of them fit inside each other (like Russian nesting dolls) and then the large one is squeezed into the bottom of the boiler cupboard - we have a combi so no airing cupboard. It's not ideal as the bag you want is often deep inside!

maresydoats · 04/05/2020 18:32

Hellooooo, We won't be travelling for a long time to come according to reports.

So the attic/loft is looking good!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 04/05/2020 18:40

Under the spare bed. Some have stuff like winter coats and hand down clothes in.

Xiaoxiong · 04/05/2020 18:44

In our current house we have a huge airing cupboard, so they are in there nested inside each other so far as is possible. In our old house they were on top of the wardrobe.

Pelleas · 04/05/2020 19:01

I keep them under my bed - some with smaller case inside big case.

Elouera · 04/05/2020 19:03

2 bed flat, so no attic, garage etc.

Top of wardrobe, inside spare room wardrobe or under the beds. Our beds flip up, but if yours don't, can you raise the height of the bed so you can fit things underneath?

Can you fit any of the suitcase inside another?

H1978 · 04/05/2020 19:04

Top of the wardrobe in dds room

rosyribbon · 04/05/2020 19:08

Under the bed in spare room with all things only used on holiday in them.

Thelaughinggnome123 · 04/05/2020 19:10

In our under the stairs cupboard.

greenlynx · 04/05/2020 19:11

2 smaller ones are inside the big ones, another big one is filled with different travel stuff and all big suitcases are wrapped up. They are sitting in the garage now, we don’t have any space at all in the bedrooms so the garage is purely for storage. In the previous house they were in the spare bedroom but we didn’t have visitors often. At some point they were in the garage: DH put a shelf up on the wall, quite high up, for suitcases, then we’ve got more stuff so moved them into the spare bedroom.

Walkerbean16 · 04/05/2020 19:25

My parent's house Grin

Chienloup · 04/05/2020 19:27

In the loft.

LoisLittsLover · 04/05/2020 20:02

Cupboards in the eaves of the top floor - these ones I use to store presents that I buy throughout the year.

Loft - big rarely used cases

In the storeage unit under our bed - weekend bags and husbands case as we travel fairly frequently and he travels for work, so those cases tend to have bits in that we use all of the time, like spare toothbrush etc

LovingLola · 04/05/2020 20:06

We have a small room at the very top of our house and that’s where ours live. It’s too small to be a bedroom but it’s great for storage.

Rollergirl11 · 04/05/2020 20:14

Suitcases are all under various beds. Other hold-alls and weekend bags are in a big drawer in a wardrobe in the spare room. The kids both have various size bags in their bedrooms, not sure where they’ve stashed them.

BestOption · 04/05/2020 20:22

In the loft. Flat is tiny, but has a decent size loft that's had a floor put in it (not just borded) Thank God as there's ZERO built in storage in the flat

Can you put them under the beds?

I wouldn't put them in my garage unless I really had no other option. It's in a row of garages & gets quite damp

Is there anywhere you could put bench seating?

Plus when space is so limited, sometimes how you want to store things, just has to give way to the practicalities🤷🏻‍♀️
