What sofa would you like? And I feel it all depends on the room decor too, but always go with what you like!

Useful recliner opposite a huge TV in the kitchen. I don’t care if it gets battered, the dogs lie on it occasionally.

We've got a tan leather sofa. It is an object of comfort not beauty and my back is far more inclined to kick up a fuss than my eyes.

We originally had a light fabric sofa which was what DH managed to get cheaply when he set up home on a limited budget. It was over 10 years old when it was just filthy beyond redemption so we replaced it with dark brown leather.

We moved house and it was too dark for the new room. It went soft quickly and my pelvis completely fell out with it in pregnancy and I moved on to an IKEA poang chair instead. After a couple of years, we gave up, sold it second hand and invested in our recliners.

It's nice to see the cheery colours in a shop display, but the velvets aren't suitable for anything more than an occasional lounge (which we don't have) and I want something that looks respectable for its life rather than on trend for 5 years.

I suppose it depends on your personal style. I am not a fan of the look, and prefer cloth.

Standrewsschool · 03/05/2020 11:06

Sitting on one now!

ScorpionQueen · 03/05/2020 11:09

I have brown leather sofas. They are 15 years old and have worn really well. Every so often I have a look for new ones but talk myself out of it as they don't need replacing.

CompleteBarstool · 03/05/2020 11:10

I don't like leather sofas at all (too cold in the winter and horrible against bare skin in the summer).
Dislike them even more if they are brown/black/beige/cream ones

Itwasntme1 · 03/05/2020 11:11

Don’t let anyone bossy tell you how to decorate your house. The world would be a very dull place if we all liked exactly the same things.

Your home should reflect your personality and style. Don’t buy something unless you love it.

villainousbroodmare · 03/05/2020 11:14

Cushions always slide down on them. As in not the actual seating cushions but the fabric ones you throw on to partially disguise the bloody things .

yumscrumfatbum · 03/05/2020 11:16

Dated, had ours for a decade. They are hugely practical and last forever if you spend enough

We have expensive (bought second hand) leather sofas. I put chunky large cushions on them. I love them. So easy to clean and will last years and years. The large cushions soften the look and in time we will get fabric but they are perfect for us with young kids.

ShiftyOwl · 03/05/2020 11:35

I love ours, they are at least 15 years old and are a mid brown aniline leather that scratches really easily. I love that they now look battered and lived in, they are also incredibly comfy.

We have dogs and I couldn’t imagine not having leather sofas and chairs, purely from a cleaning perspective.

Notso · 03/05/2020 11:41

We had them for 13 years. They were great for small children. No cushions to throw off and were wipe clean. The leather softened up beautifully over the years. We gave them away for free on FB and the new owners were very pleased.

Womenwotlunch · 03/05/2020 11:44

I like leather sofas but I am not fond of the dark brown or black leather sofas.
I prefer cream or copper leather sofas.

ofwarren · 03/05/2020 11:45

Same as lots of others. We have leather currently, just because I have 2 young children.
I will swap to a nicer one when they are old enough not to ruin it.

Thelnebriati · 03/05/2020 11:51

Easy to clean, hot in summer but you can always use a throw.

PuppyMonkey · 03/05/2020 11:52

Our main sofa is dark brown leather. I find it really comfy but that’s because it took us ages to find one with the perfect back and head support. I hate sofas that don’t support the head properly because the back is so low down.

I’m not getting rid of ours even if it is dated. Whatever one you choose will probably be dated in a couple of years OP, and people on here will be slagging it off saying “well of course, I never liked that style anyway.” Grin

lifestooshort123 · 03/05/2020 11:54

Those that say they are dated (and I know what you mean even though I love ours) will probably say the same in 5 years about all the grey everywhere - paint, carpets, sofas, kitchens. They look like identikit Next homes to me.

PuppyMonkey · 03/05/2020 11:59

Yep, those velvet jewel colour ones somebody mentioned earlier are definitely going to be “timeless classics” that don’t look naff this time next year.Wink

AgeLikeWine · 03/05/2020 12:00

I have a couple of large, old brown leather sofas. They are very comfortable, well-made and practical. I couldn’t care less if they are seen as fashionable or not, that is not a relevant consideration.

Puddlesplasher · 03/05/2020 12:08

@AWryGiraffe - lots of comfy, non shiny sofas here. We bought our sofa from them several years ago and can recommend. Made in Britain too. www.authenticfurniture.co.uk

MaisyMary77 · 03/05/2020 12:27

We’ve got a Sloane sofa from Darlings of Chelsea. It’s about 12 years old. It’s aged really well-looks worn in and comfy but not tired. It’s not shiny, cold or sticky. It’s just nice. Only thing I dislike about it is having to use the leather conditioner stuff every few months. Smile

MikeEhrmantraut · 03/05/2020 12:31

We inherited ours from my parents when they got new ones. They're inoffensive, wipe clean and great with a shedding dog and a toddler. We will keep them until we're out of the baby years and get something more stylish. I like the huge tan leather sofas and mismatched colourful seats. Absolutely hate the crushed velvet chesterfield look ones that are "in" at the moment though.

BarbedBloom · 03/05/2020 13:46

I don't like any leather furniture but it is your home so get what you like
