I like the timeless ones which look loved and will last years. Shiny new ones less so

bluestarsatnightfall · 03/05/2020 08:31

Practical if you have young children.

ProtectAll · 03/05/2020 08:32

I love mine, so comfortable, blends well with the room and doesn’t look dated at all.

Sameold2020 · 03/05/2020 08:32

I hate leather sofas, but we have had our brown leather one for 8 years and its been amazing. Two kids under two and it has survived brilliantly. We don't need to shout and stress at the kids with food, drink, pens etc. Next time we'll get a fabric one, but they are not worth it with young children.

Our sofa has chesterfield type arms, so does look quite classic.

KingOfDogShite · 03/05/2020 08:34

Tan fine, brown nope.

longtimecomin · 03/05/2020 08:36

I had a lovely brown leather 3 price for ten years. It was still immaculate at the 10th year but I'd grown bored and wanted a change. Very trendy from 2005-2015 ish but not so popular now.

NerdImmunity · 03/05/2020 08:37

Massively out of date! Reminds me of the late 90s/00s when all my friends parents had the same ugly leather sofas! We

incognitomum · 03/05/2020 08:38

@AWryGiraffe why not check out a second hand one?

I bought mine off a good friend when she moved in with a dp and didn't need hers. They're very comfy. Were originally about 1K and I got them for 100. Another friend had offered her 50 which she was going to take!

Horsemad · 03/05/2020 08:39

I want to change my brown leather sofa within the next year, What's 'in' now?

I've got grown up kids who don't live here much & 2 cats...

Ohffs66 · 03/05/2020 08:42

Depends. Old battered classic ones I like. Very shiny hard dark brown square shaped ones, naff. They always remind me of a holiday let where it looks like the main concern is the furniture doesn't show the dirt and is wipeable, rather than any aesthetic considerations

Bagelsandbrie · 03/05/2020 08:44

Hate any leather sofas. So uncomfortable.

DelurkingAJ · 03/05/2020 08:48

We have some matt dark tan sofas. I was unconvinced but DH persuaded me and with small DC they’ve been amazing. Cats haven’t done much damage. 8 years later and they only look mildly worn.

But don’t get bossed into anything you don’t want!

PrincessBiscuit · 03/05/2020 08:50

We've got a matt soft tan leather sofa that is meant to look a bit battered. It's comfy, soft and timeless... plus, it's wipe clean! I always have a bit of a heart attacks when it gets wet as it dramatically changes colour but it's always dries and goes back to normal.

lifestooshort123 · 03/05/2020 08:53

We love ours, big square leather arms and base and then dark brown corduroy cushions on base and back. Was v expensive 10 years ago and still looks great and as comfy to stretch out on as a bed. I wouldn't want one all leather though. It looks quality.

zafferana · 03/05/2020 08:54

I hate leather sofas. I don't like the way they look and to sit on I find them cold initially, you slide about on them because they're shiny, which I don't like, I don't feel them cosy and if it's a hot day you stick to them. I won't have leather seats in my car for the same reasons.

Strugglingtodomybest · 03/05/2020 08:58

We've got one in the kitchen. It's a bit battered now but still comfy.

Does it really matter what everyone else thinks though? Just nod and smile at the bossy person (mum?) when they tell you what you should be doing and then go and buy the sofa you want.

GameSetMatch · 03/05/2020 08:59

I have two, I used to have cloth but the children and dog destroyed them with their sticky fingers, constant licking (dog) and toilet training accidents so I went for leather and I’ve never looked back, easy to clean, comfortable and looks great!

Hoohaahoo · 03/05/2020 09:01

I have them but I don’t like the look of them. They are very practical with young, messy children though. Ours are 6 years old and still look good, no signs of wear yet.

I am looking forward to getting a big squashy fabric sofa when the children are older though.

inwood · 03/05/2020 09:03

We had them for years. They looked so old fashioned I the end I was glad to get rid.

SpillTheTeaa · 03/05/2020 09:15

I think they are a bit dated but if you like them why not?

dementedma · 03/05/2020 09:27

Horrible. Cold and slippery, or sticky in summer. Ugly things

fussychica · 03/05/2020 09:30

I've got one plus a fabric sofa and chair. The leather sofa is 7 years old and looks brand new. Suits my room. Lots of jewel coloured cushions which I alternate to give the room a different feel.

Pasithea · 03/05/2020 09:33

Old boot sofas are fab. Not shiny vintage styles. Love them.

Grasspigeons · 03/05/2020 09:33

They are very dated. I have them because they werent dated when i bought them. They were the equivlent of velvet sofas in jewel colours right now.
The bonus is they wipe clean and have lasted very well. I went through a stage of being a bit embarressed by them as they were dated and brown. Then i had environmental -i cant replace perfectly good items every time fashion changes' moment.

Smarshian · 03/05/2020 09:50

We have an old battered classic one. Got gifted them when we moved into our current house from DF as he was getting new ones. They are probably 20 years old.
I would never have picked them but actually find them incredibly comfortable, hard wearing, great for the kids (spillages) and have no desire to replace them.
