Anyone got a peloton bike?

DH considering one. Eye wateringly expensive. I do not get the hype.
Are they worth it? I can't comprehend how they can be?! Are they magic bikes that will make me immediately morph into some kind of glossy slim athlete the moment I plonk myself down on the seat? Grin

Following as considering the same.

SliAnCroix · 02/05/2020 23:05

don't do it! being on an exercise bike is so boring. every minute feels like 5.

andadietcoke · 02/05/2020 23:14

I'm obsessed with ours. We got it in September and it's the first exercise I've ever stuck to. Not all the instructors are my favourite but I've gone from doing no exercise to doing 30 minutes most days. Last Saturday I did 50 miles of classes and was on the bike for 3.5 hours - I still can't believe this is me. They do follow through on the trial and are extending it beyond the 30 days at the moment so if ever there was a time to risk it. I have referral codes that would save you £100. Not loads in the scale of things but we used one when we got ours and every little helps. Happy to ask any questions you have.

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 02/05/2020 23:15

I so want one!

SunflowerSeedsForever · 03/05/2020 03:52

We have a gadget that converts a standard bike into a turbo trainer. Set up with full tv infront-

Much cheaper.

Iorderedyouapancake · 03/05/2020 07:30

I got one a few weeks before lockdown on the 30 day trial thinking I’d probably send it back afterwards but we are definitely keeping it (DH was sceptical but he regularly uses it too now), we’re both surprised by how much we like it to be honest- there’s also loads of non bike classes that are included in the subscription, yesterday I did a running class and a yoga class, this morning I’m back on the bike. I’d recommend joining the UK Ladies Peloton group on Facebook (I joined FB just to do this), it’s an incredibly supportive and motivating group and there are loads of group challenges they run with prizes, I’m on a couple for May.

I originally thought there was no way I’d push myself to work hard on a spin bike sitting at home on my own (back when I was fit I used to do spin classes a lot and it was always the fear of someone else seeing me turn my resistance down that kept me going Grin), but I work SO much harder than I ever did in the gym- firstly because I’m competing against myself (there’s a leaderboard which tracks your performance against previous rides as well as against other users) but also because the instructors I choose and their music are really motivational- the great thing is there are so many to choose from you’re bound to find at least a few whose classes you enjoy.

As you can probably tell I’m a convert! It is expensive I agree but if you can afford it then I personally think it’s worth it- maybe try the 30 day free trial option if you’re not sure?

HattieMid2 · 03/05/2020 07:33

I really want one!

Aberforthsgoat · 03/05/2020 23:15

Interesting. Ive been reading more about it and DH almost has me convinced - would love a referral code @andadietcoke thank you

I don't know if I would get the use out of it because of clingy baby DS but maybe while he naps? DH is convinced it will be the game changer exercise wise

Let's us know if you do go for it. To the people that have one is it in your house?? Or outside in a shed or gym. It's far to big for any rooms we have, but my take is if I put it outside I'll ignore it!

Bridecilla · 04/05/2020 00:55

I love one. I've just found spinning at the gym and was starting to improve my fitness (I'm fat and 42)

I'm guessing they're ££££ rather than £££?

iwanttobreakfreeeeee · 04/05/2020 06:27

@whynotchangemore ours is in the back hallway which is a pointlessly large room so first time we’ve found a use for it- I know of people who have them in garages or outbuildings but know that wouldn’t have worked for me as my arachnophobia keeps me well away from the shed Smile. @Bridecilla they are expensive I’m afraid - 2k for the bike plus there’s a monthly subscription for the classes (without that the bike is pointless) but they usually do an interest free credit option and a 30 day free trial- with the credit option it’s more in line with an expensive gym membership as a monthly fee.

Ginfilledcats · 04/05/2020 06:31

My friend works for them in PR but she wouldn't buy brand new, she bought second hand but is obsessed. To the point that all her instagram posts are about this bloody bike lol. So she obviously thinks it's good

mrscampbellblackagain · 04/05/2020 06:36

Love mine! Got it just into lockdown and it has been invaluable. I used to go to spin about 3 times a week before lockdown so bought it to replace that. DH was not massively into it as he is a very keen mountain biker. He is however on it as I type doing his ftp test.

I actually find it better than my spin classes and appreciate that it is just so convenient. The instructors are great and I definitely have my faves.

And I find the time goes really quickly, I generally do a 30 min or 45 min class 5 days a week followed by a 10 min upper body work out.

iwanttobreakfreeeeee · 04/05/2020 06:54

@Ginfilledcats I did consider buying second hand, saw a few for £1500-£1700 depending how keen the sellers were- the downsides to it that I could see were that you can’t get the interest free credit or the 30 day trial that way and you need to sort out your own transportation (they’re v heavy!)

SimonJT · 04/05/2020 07:06

We have echelon (similar to peleton), cycling is one of the few exercises my boyfriend can do (due to disability), he does at least 45 minutes a day. I tend to do 45 minutes every 2/3 days as I do a range of other exercises.

We both like it, there are also lots of noncycling classes available. A few friends have an echelon so we like being able to do challenges together.

cookiesaurus · 04/05/2020 07:27

We've had one since November and we both really like it.

We previously had a turbo set up but we just didn't use it because of the faff of swapping bikes over. Between working long hours and having a toddler, we needed something we could just jump on.

I'm 22 weeks pregnant and still using the bike but I've also started using the other classes a bit more too. You can project them onto your TV so you don't have to be able to see the bike screen.

I've found that there's a very encouraging and motivating group on Facebook which is really great (UK ladies peloton) with organisers group rides at various times of day.

I have found that people seem to either love the idea of the bike or hate it. But I think people who hate it tend to be people who have not bought the bike and do not like the 'idea' of it or cannot/ don't want to afford it. It might be worth asking whether or not those with negative views have experience of the bike? Everyone I know who has bought it has kept it following the 30 day trial.

Riding a bike outside is different to spinning but for many, like me (due to childcare issues), it just isn't feasible and I have gone from riding my road bike 2x a week to not having ridden since being pregnant 2 years ago.

The peloton offers the flexibility to work out when you want to. If you enjoy spinning and can afford the bike and the subscription go for it. If you can't afford it, perhaps try a lower priced exercise bike along with the digital app (I think there's a 90 day free app only offer atm).

Bloomburger · 04/05/2020 07:27

Reading with interest, ours is coming next Monday.

BovvyDazz · 04/05/2020 07:45

I’ve got a 4 month free trial of their general classes (I’ve seen 90 day free trial available Currently).

How about seeing if you like their instructors/style and can motivate/find time for their general (non bike) classes before buying a bike?

I generally like their classes; I’ve been doing yoga and strength ones; really easy to filter by instructor or by length to fit in with the time you have. Not sure I’ll continue after my free trial; depends if my gym has reopened by then!

agteacht · 04/05/2020 11:03

I have a Keiser m2 soon bike and use the peloton app 6 days a week. It's brilliant.

I'm sure the bike is fab but couldn't justify the spend so this was my workaround instead!

agteacht · 04/05/2020 11:03

*spin not soon...

MotheringShites · 04/05/2020 11:06

I love it. It really is a game-changer.

Aberforthsgoat · 05/05/2020 09:41

We've decided to go for it on the thirty day free trial Shock

How much do they cost ? Are they thousands ?
I got a second hand spin bike that dp put in our garden shed along with a mini sound system Wink He did a spin bike course a couple of years ago so he could coach sessions at our tri club - he created a few sessions for me that I could do on my own and I found that a great way of maintaining fitness when I couldn’t run due to injury.

PrimalLass · 05/05/2020 09:58

Watching this with interest. Let us know how you get on.

mrscampbellblackagain · 05/05/2020 10:00

Bertoldbrecht - they are around the £2k mark and then a monthly subscription on top
