Anyone got a peloton bike?

DH considering one. Eye wateringly expensive. I do not get the hype.
Are they worth it? I can't comprehend how they can be?! Are they magic bikes that will make me immediately morph into some kind of glossy slim athlete the moment I plonk myself down on the seat? Grin

We looked at it, but when we realised it was £2k for the bike and £500 a year subscription we simply couldn’t justify it.

Poachedeggs1 · 09/05/2020 08:11

You can use any spin bike and just be an app user - but the cadence & resistance won’t be accurate.

andadietcoke · 09/05/2020 09:00

@aberforthsgoat I think it's probably too late (I'm so sorry, completely missed your reply) but if not, my referral code is 8HKXAK

Even if too late and you have any questions feel free to message - I had so many questions when I got mine.

Aberforthsgoat · 09/05/2020 11:05

It's not too late thank you! We were debating whether to get just the bike or the shoes etc as well so haven't ordered yet

@bloomburger Can I ask how long you waited for delivery please? I ordered one a couple of days ago but haven't received a delivery date yet.

Aberforthsgoat · 09/05/2020 11:32

They're saying 3-5 weeks delivery time.as far as I know

I use the peloton app and a normal spin bike. I've got a polar vantage m watch and hr monitor to record my stats ( obviously just for me no leaderboards etc). I also use the running classes with a normal treadmill not a peloton tread. Love it. Robin is favourite!

Bloomburger · 09/05/2020 13:17

prawnmeringue I think it was 3 weeks from when we ordered it.

I'm stopping my gym membership and DH's as I have a gym at home and I run anyway so figured it'd pay for itself pretty quickly.

There are some good Facebook groups you can join. A ladies one and a yoga one. The yoga classes and the strength classes on the App are really good.

andadietcoke · 09/05/2020 14:22

@aberforthsgoat the shoes are good but you can get cheaper ones elsewhere if you can be bothered. Nike are bringing some out in June - you need the LOOK delta system.

The way the referral code works is that the £100 off is for accessories so you could use that for shoes. We got the family pack - the water bottles are awful and have never been used as open neck. The mat is good but good be done cheaper - it's just a black mat (but worth having something because of sweat drips!). Headphones we rarely use and you can obviously use your own. Heart rate monitors are flakey at best and could get a wrist or forearm one cheaper from amazon that would be more reliable. Of what we got in the family pack we use the weights most, and then obviously the shoes.

andadietcoke · 09/05/2020 14:25

Have also heard of a few people getting their bikes sooner than the estimated date at the moment down to cancellations. Depends on where you are and whether it's Peloton or DPO. Either way they deliver to your doorstep and it's pretty heavy (60kg) so worth bearing in mind if you need to get it up stairs.

There's very little installation involved though, even normally - they basically just plugged mine in and signposted a few videos!

TheHighestSardine · 09/05/2020 14:58

Ridiculous proposition. You spend vast money on an exercise bike (and they 99% of the time end up as a clothes drying stand, we all know that), then you pay even more money for a subscription to their pointless spinning classes, then they stop working if Peloton gives up on them? They're totally Silicon Valley.

If you have a tablet, get a (second hand!) good quality electric exercise bike and strap it on, put on some Youtube first person scenery or spin class vids, or a dedicated app like Bitgym, and away you go for 10% of the price.

If you're lucky enough to have suitable outdoors, spend the money on a push bike instead.

Iorderedyouapancake · 09/05/2020 15:15

Like any kind of non essential item it’s horses for course though isn’t it sardine? I’d never spend that kind of money on eg jewellery or a handbag or a holiday, but if others want to then good for them. Of course any exercise equipment is a waste of money if you don’t use it, for me I use mine almost every day and so do most others I know of in the community. It does everything I used to do in the gym (spinning was my favourite form of exercise) better, and as DH uses it too it works out cheaper than a gym membership would have been. A tablet and an exercise bike is a good alternative option for those who can’t/ don’t want to spend that much money as several of us have already pointed out, but for me personally the peloton was worth it. I think the only reason peloton would ever “give up” on the classes is if they went bust (as that’s their entire business model!), but that seems very unlikely any time soon and was a risk I was prepared to take.

TheHighestSardine · 09/05/2020 15:24

£39 a month! You can get an actual gym membership for that.

Of course people can spend their money any way they like. The big worry for this sort of thing is how badly they're reliant on the parent company still deigning to support you.

Internet-subbed things die out all the time.

pinkrocker · 09/05/2020 15:25

@agteacht I've got a Kaiser too, mine's pretty old and squeaks Blush but I would LOVE to fit a cadence monitor etc to it. It's not electric and is incredibly heavy but very comfy to spin. Any ideas?

jcurve · 09/05/2020 15:44

I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but there’s a pandemic on and new good quality spin bikes (let alone second hand ones) are pretty much sold out everywhere.

Not for 2 people in London.

Internet-subbed things die out all the time.

There’ll be a substantial asset base to take over by a buyer if they file for Chapter 11, it won’t just die. However, their stock hit a new high as every man and his dog has a Peloton now, so I think we’re safe for the foreseeable future.

agteacht · 10/05/2020 00:20

@pinkrocker squeaks eh :) what model is it?

You can get a product from a brand called wahoo to measure cadence. You clip it onto the pedal. Apparently it links to the peloton app though I've not managed that yet.

But there's a Facebook group called Keiser Riders Peleton Group and they seem helpful if you need someone more techie than me!

pinkrocker · 10/05/2020 00:36

agteacht it's old, so old it has no model numbers hah! Black and orange with no electronic gizmos. I shall go have a look at the wahoo thing, thank you.

Bertoldbrecht · 10/05/2020 00:41

To be fair when it comes down to it it’s all about motivation. You’ll do it if you enjoy it. I’ve got my own spin routine, music and sometimes use sufferfest if I really want to push myself. My bike was £80 from a gym that was shutting down. I’m not a professional athlete so really can’t warrant spending £2000 plus yearly fees on it.

Bertoldbrecht · 10/05/2020 00:44

Maybe in London they’ve all got peleton bikes but not round here ! None of our tri club have them Bit too pricey tbh

agteacht · 10/05/2020 06:00

@pinkrocker I think wahoo should work fine regardless of its age 😉

Honesttodog · 14/05/2020 18:24

Did you get the peloton shoes or order from elsewhere? Worried about fit

Iorderedyouapancake · 14/05/2020 18:43

I got the peloton shoes as got a deal which included them- they had several sizes on the van so you could swap if needed but suspect with social distancing that’s not currently allowed :(. I’d recommend sizing up as they come up a bit small. I’m a size 5 but got a 6 which fits perfectly. If anyone else would like a referral code feel free to pm me Smile I think peloton keep an eye out for people posting them on open forums so won’t put it on here.

jcurve · 15/05/2020 08:05

@Honesttodog we got Peloton shoes as they were thrown in free. I sized up from a 6.5 (40) to a 41 (7) as I’ve always found that 40 is a bit tight in spinning studios. I’ve found the bigger size to be comfortable.

The shoes are definitely not worth over £100 though, I would have gone for something else if they weren’t free.

MotherFeeder · 16/05/2020 14:48

Hi there, I'd be interested to hear how those who have recently purchased Peleton bikes are getting on. I used to love Spin Classes although haven't been to one in years and have been having PT for a year now and am really struggling with the lack of exercise during lock down...

ajandjjmum · 09/08/2020 17:10

Interested to see this thread - we stayed in a hotel once that had a Peloton bike in the bedroom, and DH loved it! He goes to the gym most days, so was thinking of getting him this for his birthday. I might even use it too!

I wondered if anyone had an updates, further experience etc., following this thread in May?

Thank you.
