Have you seen Caroline Criado-Perez's talk for New Scientist?

If you haven't read her book (or even if you have) please watch her talk.

Extra points if you watch with a man.

(Be aware she's fond of a swear)

I will bump this every half hour for the rest of eternity because, let's face it, I haven't got anything else on.

Dammit, I'm late for my bumping

We watched it. I was unaware that I hadn't discussed it with DH before now. He has long complained that the safety gloves he has to wear make working dangerous as they are about twice the size of his hands.

He has complained that he cannot get safe safety wear and, to prove them wrong, sourced alternative, smaller sized PPE, including women's wear. He was surprised it was easy to source and not much.more as expensive as he had only just had to tell a female colleague that he couldn't help, there was no such thing as commercially available, certified site wear smaller or more suitable for women.

His company shrugged, odd as the management team are all female.

So he is taking in a copy of her book and is sending them a link too.

I had no idea it annoyed him so much. But he spent half an hour talking to his female colleagues, priming them for what might happen, giving them the links.

Thankfully none of them told him he was mansplaining*, but he is fairly angry about it, and I had no idea he had been shouting about it for a while.

*He is older, less bothered by the management, they are all much younger, at the beginning the start of their careers in a mostly male industry. I suspect they are happy to let him take the flak.

I swear I used paragraphs! Sorry.

MiraWard77 · 01/05/2020 16:53

I saw paragraphs, @CuriousaboutSamphire

Interesting that even the Default Male PPE wasn't right for men/a man, let alone women.

I think when we are younger we're still quite conditioned to think the problem is with ourselves/the individual, rather than the system. I think it takes experience to see this as not just old women's whining. (Or 'older men' in this case)

Turns out I do have to do stuff. Have you watched this yet? How about the Default Human in your life?

I’ve got her book and just started reading it. Will watch this later with DH.

MiraWard77 · 06/05/2020 07:18

@Sexnotgender I finished her book before I watched this. It's like a brief review of some of the thins covered in the book. I watched it to try to get DH to engage with it (but he wandered off)

It's an accessible first step into the topics covered in the book.
