Dd age 5 has just come over and said her tooth is loose. I thought she meant her front tooth but it was a big one up the top second from last. I’ve looked and the one next to it looks odd and is half hanging out too. What is going on? It looks discoloured too.

Do I need an emergency appointment or do I leave it as there’s noting that can be done? How do I know if all the tooth is out? It’s very small.

Ring your dentist, they'll be able to have a chat and help you. Is your DD in any pain?

stiffchain · 30/04/2020 20:16

I'm a dentist. If you want post a photo? Difficult to know what's going on without actually seeing it.
Or alternatively phone your own dentist in the morning and arrange to do the same thing

Hard to know, could be that the tooth was decayed and broke. I would try speak to a dentist tomorrow for advice.

Toppingpoint · 30/04/2020 20:30

Ok I’ll phone my dentist tomorrow, to my shame she’s only ever been once. I’ll try to attach a picture @stiffchain, any advice would be great. I’ve taken one from the side view aswell.

I think it’s probably decay. Her teeth seem different to my other dc, weaker and discoloured. I’m so cross with myself.

Hmm... that looks like a baby back that has exfoliated... ( no roots on it, so looks like it was ready to come out).
Strange, as she's only 5, so a bit young for a back tooth to come out just yet.
Has she lost any other baby teeth yet? Was there any bleeding? Can you see any signs of an adult tooth erupting in the area where the tooth used to be?
I wouldn't overly worry, but maybe give your dentist a call in the morning

Thanks for getting back to me.

Bottom front have fallen out and new adult ones are coming through. One top front came out months ago but no sign of adult tooth.

No bleeding at all, just the odd tooth next to it which after having a closer look, looks broken and is hanging out.

Do they fall out if decayed? Is it likely to be infected or anything like that?

They don't fall out if decayed. They might break a bit... but that tooth that has fallen out is intact.
I think it's just fallen out. She will probably be ok and a new one will grow in its place.
Just never seen this happen before in someone so young, but it's the likely explanation, especially if she's lost other baby teeth already as well.
Signs of infection to look out for- pain, redness, swelling, bad smell.
I think she will probably be ok x

There's a few underlying medical conditions that can cause early loss of baby teeth. She wouldn't normally lose this tooth until about 11. It looks like it might have a small bit of decay but that wouldn't explain it falling out. Definitely phone your dentist for reassurance/ advice.
