Top shelves in fitted wardrobes

Hi all,

We made a mistake in designing our fitted wardrobes so we ended up with top shelves that are 46cm high and hanging space underneath that’s kind of low and not too much space underneath for more drawers and baskets. I can upload pics if it helps.

It’s an expensive mistake and now I’m wondering how I can use that space in an efficient way. Wish there was something like pull out shelf (same as the rods used for hanging).

I’ve tried to store linen there but I still have a gap on top as the boxes I managed to find are only 25cm high.

Maybe I’m just overthinking this but I thought that fitted wardrobes are all about vertical space and there shouldn’t be much dead space.

Any ideas welcome!
Thanks a lot!

Would it not be a small job to swap the fittings around?

Have you had a good mooch around the Pax section of the Ikea website?

Can you bot have the shelves taken out and the bar put up higher?

Unfortunately the shelves are glued and nailed. My husband would tell me to do it myself if I keep bring it up :D he’s not up for it and I have tried so many times. He says it will disturb the structure of the wardrobe

If you look on ikea there are some pull out fabric drawers that you can get. Depending on your needs you could store bulky seasonal-wear in the drawers up there?

can you add another shelf?
I would add a shelf, and then stor things you hardly use up on the top shelf (eg winter clothes in summer)
Then you can use your 25cm drawers.

Would the drona boxes from ikea fit up there? They are 33cm high and would hold a lot of linen/out of season clothes and you could potentially add another shelf above them?

Thanks all for the replies.

Which drawers do you mean? The ones that you can buy for pax wardrobes and they have a zip at the top?

Yes I agree maybe worth putting a 20cm shelf from the top to store seasonal clothes and I can use the rest of the shelves for linen

Drona box has the right height but it’s not wide enough for towels, bed sheets etc.

I have this issue across all wardrobes in our house and the example above is just for my husbands wardrobe :D

For my wardrobe I think I’ll add extra shelves for seasonal clothes at the very top and leave a shelf for hand bags.

I wish I could rip the whole thing off and do it again :(

Putting hanging space as high as you can is a must when designing a fitted wardrobe. Lesson learned :( the hard way

im also curious how you store items like scarves, jewellery, hand bags

Any recommendations for hangers? I’m looking for something like this higherhangers.com/ so I can gain a few inches under the hanging space. Unfortunately these are not available and they are patented so I don’t think I’ll find something similar

Thanks a lot! X
