This all seems a bit much
Kind of sick of hearing about it
Nothing against him, huge well done to him but every single day I hear his name.
Distraction techniques are getting to me

@Lordfrontpaw For the 100th time, I do not watch the news.

Hopefully after his birthday today the media will leave him alone and find somebody else to either idolise or bully.

Happy birthday to Captain Tom hope he has a fantastic day.

PatricksRum · 30/04/2020 09:41

Agree the actual story may be uplifting but that's not what they're reporting on.

Patricks - I was saying that the person in the post above! No need to shout...

wheresmyhairytoe · 30/04/2020 09:42

I'm with you OP.

Yes he's done an amazing thing but all the press attention makes my cynical brain think it's a distraction from the fact the NHS isn't a charity and old men shouldn't have to raise money for it.
It should be properly funded but the government haven't done that!

AlternativePerspective · 30/04/2020 09:43

Yup it's too much. Where is the actual news? what actual news? Three hours of doom and gloom on coronavirus? 24 hour wall to wall coverage all of which is intended to be as depressing as possible? I’ve stopped actually watching that news and I watch the briefing only until the journalists come on to ask the same questions over, and over, and over again, each journalist asking the same question which has often been covered in the briefing.

And yet you OP are so sick of hearing about Captain Tom that you started a thread to talk about him? Okayyyy. Switch it off and have a [biscuit[

PatricksRum · 30/04/2020 09:44

Apologies Blush lord

I think he did a lovely amazing thing, he seems like a sound fellow. However, this adulation of him as some god-like figure is getting a bit much now, and in some circles this is tied up with the fact that he fought in the war and this gets people in even more of a froth, and then the whole NHS thing.

I saw a thing the other day on FB where a Windows company had commissioned a graffiti artist to do a big mural on a wall of Captain Tom's face with all the soldier imagery in the background, NHS etc. All very lovely but then they put their company name in big red letters along the bottom which did rather spoil it somewhat! Grin

I'm sure Captain Tom himself is a bit mortified by it all now tbh.

PatricksRum · 30/04/2020 09:45

@AlternativePerspective I'll switch off the news when you read the thread Smile

Thats awful! I knew it wouldn't be long

I have, and you haven’t said anything groundbreaking or that hasn’t been said in the other three anti captain tom threads which were in active when I looked.

Don’t like it? Then don’t watch it. Switch off your social media notifications, nothing’s that important that you have to be notified of it, and pay attention to your family on FaceTime rather than what they’re watching on television.

But it’s easier to start a thread and complain than do something pro-active isn’t it?

Bit mercenary though....

Hoggleludo · 30/04/2020 09:56

Awe

He’s on tiktok. Or his son.

He filled up a local church with the cards he received. It was stunningly beautiful.

SouthWestmom · 30/04/2020 10:13

British people can't just let people do nice things without building a pedestal to put them on and then quietly kicking it so they fall off.

Why he couldn't he just be thanked without now being promoted, being a number one single holder, spouting crap we all have to accept as pearls of wisdom (it'll all be ok. Will it? For everyone? I think not). Etc etc.

Who does the “media circus” hurt? If captain Tom is enjoying himself; the nhs has 30m extra quid; the general public have a nice focus.....where’s the harm

Brahumbug · 30/04/2020 10:42

Except he want raising money for the NHS if you bothered to check your facts. He was raising money for NHS welfare charities which support staff, volunteers and patients affected by covid 19, outside the remit of NHS care.

Brahumbug · 30/04/2020 10:43

Except he wasn't, not want!

PatricksRum · 30/04/2020 10:46

@AlternativePerspective you clearly haven't read where I said thrice I don't watch the news.
