When do you think foreign travel will resume?

Just as the title suggests... when do you think foreign travel for holidays will resume?

I’m an nhs a&e nurse and just about exhausted with covid- I’m saving up for a nice holiday when it’s all over. But when? I have annual leave for July (ha! I will do extra nightshifts that week as I’m sure travel won’t be an option then) and a week off in the middle of July then a week off in early November. Do you think there is any chance of foreign travel in November?
I just want to lay back on a sun lounger and swim in the sea somewhere hot!

I don't believe we won't be able to go abroad until Summer 2022! Hmm. August/September this year is my guess, I hope so as I have Thailand booked for end of September Grin

Waxonwaxoff0 · 30/04/2020 17:19

Another one here who books holidays far in advance. I booked a holiday for next February at the beginning of the year, I'm 50/50 about whether it will go ahead. I also had one booked for July but I've moved it to July 2021 now.

ProfChaos · 30/04/2020 17:19

@basil where did you get 17 months from out of interest?

Ghostlyglow · 30/04/2020 17:21

I don't think foreign travel for holidays will be realistically until next year. I think it will be much more expensive too Sad

Waxonwaxoff0 · 30/04/2020 17:22

@BasilDiffuser lockdown is not going to be for 17 months. Social distancing maybe, but not lockdown.

WyfOfBathe · 30/04/2020 17:31

I think different countries will open up at different times. Places like Australia and New Zealand seem to have shutting their borders as a key part of their approach, so I think will probably open up later than some other countries. Countries with less developed hospital systems may also wait until later, I'm guessing (Madagascar for example only has 0.2 hospital beds per 1000 residents - we have 2.8 - so probably won't want extra people).

My parents live in France and we were supposed to be going there in July. We're now hoping to see them at Christmas instead.

Shmithecat2 · 30/04/2020 17:38

Fuck knows. I don't live in the UK but I'm stuck here until whenever. I'm desperate to get home Sad

Ghostlyglow · 30/04/2020 17:50

It will be impossible to enforce social distancing in airports if foreign travel for holidays is allowed. Think of the security/passport queues, departure gates etc. That's before you even think of getting on and off the plane.

DeeCeeCherry · 30/04/2020 22:12

Nobody knows, all everyone is doing is speculating based on what they think should happen. Thats not the same as knowing. It depends on the country too - as a guess, I doubt countries that are very reliant on tourism are going to keep borders closed for the next 1 or 2 years.

getyoursocksoffhoney · 01/05/2020 10:41

I should've been going to America today, we are hoping to go next feb/March instead but the way the US are dealing with it I'm not so sure...
If by October we are able to travel to places like Greece for a cheap week AI we probably would if it's still looking unlikely by then that we could do the US in feb/March.
Ideally we would do the US in December but I'm concerned with the way they are dealing with things so think that will be too early.

Rottnest · 03/05/2020 02:25

@getyoursocksoffhoney
I also should have been going to US next week, now whole trip postponed until May 2021.
IMO the situation is being handled so badly in US that even that date might be unrealistic.
If many states lift restrictions and discontinue self isolation and self distancing, I can see a huge rise in the number of cases and subsequent deaths. This will probably require another lockdown TBH.
I am not all doom and gloom, but I would prefer to be alive with a good chance of health, rather than sick or dead.

I cannot forsee much of an improvement by December, but I live in hope, that's all we can do really.
I'm finding the lockdown quite difficult really but, it is all we can do, and we are all of responsible for our own behaviour.
Sorry to be negative!!

Bloodybridget · 03/05/2020 04:23

@BasilDiffuser has said this on other threads, about lockdown being 17 months, with no explanation or justification. Very irritating!

LorenzoStDubois · 03/05/2020 04:29

2021 I'd say.

bettybattenburg · 03/05/2020 04:33

We have a holiday booked for late summer next year so fingers crossed, we booked now because I think they will be busy once people start to think of travelling again.

onefinalquestion · 03/05/2020 04:42

I live in the UAE. It was suggested in the press here that Dubai hotels might reopen to tourism in July. I don't know yet whether that means only for residents.

MissAnanke · 03/05/2020 04:58

I wish I knew. We have flights booked for the end of Aug to Toronto.

Cantdecidewhich · 03/05/2020 06:58

Our honeymoon was June to Vietnam and the airline have contacted us to say our seats have been changed to follow social distancing rules! I still think it will be cancelled though. We always go to Thailand for Christmas and I have seen a good deal I am tempted to book and hope if it doesn't go ahead we can just get a refund.

TW2013 · 03/05/2020 07:05

I would still plan to take some time off in July. Hopefully by then the lockdown will have eased slightly and the weather might be ok so even if it is a towel and sunbathing in the park you deserve a break. You will be saving money in other ways by not going out as much/ clothes shopping etc.

Bluesheep8 · 03/05/2020 07:05

Lockdown is at least 17 months so you will be looking at summer 22.

Where is this piece of information from?

Booboostwo · 03/05/2020 07:31

France has just introduced a 2 week quaranteen for anyone wanting to enter the country (with a tiny number of exceptions for transporters, etc). I suspect other countries may follow suit effectively ending foreign tourism for this summer season. Come September things may be looking more positive for tourism but again it is possible we will have an autumn spike in COVID case, which, along with the start of the flu season, will impose stricter lockdowns again.

I don’t see foreign travel resuming properly until a vaccine has been found. If you live in Serbia you might be able to make it to Greece by August but that’s about it.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 03/05/2020 07:56

There's a dementor Billybullshitter that bitchplops that made up 17 months thing all over the place at the moment
Why 17? Why not 18 or 15?
It's just made up goady scaremongering bollocks without any actual facts to back it up
