When do you think we'll actually be able to buy flour and yeast again?

I didn't stockpile. I wish I had now! Can't find it anywhere!
Has anyone found any?

Our morrisons was selling it in the bags they put the sausage rolls in

Same!

Hamm87 · 29/04/2020 20:14

Yeast I bought bulk fresh from Amazon and just freeze it flour I got in 16kg sacks from a catering supplier used half the bread flour already

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 29/04/2020 20:15

Asda have started bagging it in the bakery bags too and selling it in the bakery section

Yellowbutterfly1 · 29/04/2020 20:22

I can sort of understand the flour shortage (lack of smaller bags) but does anyone know why there is still the issue getting dried yeast?

BikeRunSki · 30/04/2020 06:48

@Yellowbutterfly1, I’ve been thinking about this. Presumably, some people will have stocked up on yeast either because they make their bread anyway, and have fine for years eg: my PIL, or because they panicked and bought some just in case there were bread shortages. The thing is, when I buy flour, 1 bag is enough for 2 loaves, but when I buy dried yeast, the smallest boxes/tins are enough for 8 loaves or more. So there may be something to do with minimum package size, but I also think there may have been a lag from Brexit peepers. Or I may be talking total rubbish.

NoWordForFluffy · 30/04/2020 06:53

Where does the yeast come from? I've noticed issues with some imported items (peppers, baby corn, sugarsnap peas); is the yeast also an importing victim?

Lailaloo747 · 30/04/2020 06:55

We’ve got everything here (east anglia) only thing I struggled to get was yeast but plenty around now. My mum is 45 mins away and hasn’t been able to get eggs, yeast or flour for weeks now.

sittingonacornflake · 30/04/2020 06:55

Farm shops have started bagging up flours into plastic bags and selling it that way. I think the issue is the supply of small paper bags for flour for domestic use.

TeaAndTrifle · 30/04/2020 07:11

On eBay loads of sellers have 500g packs of Fermipan dried yeast (good quality) for around £10. I'm not sure of the markup but it's such a big pack I'm happy to pay that to keep me in yeast for the rest of the year!

Isleepinahedgefund · 30/04/2020 07:22

My local shop doesn’t seem to have any trouble getting flour at the mo. And our local bakery is selling large bags too. None in the supermarkets tho.

Chasingsquirrels · 30/04/2020 07:31

I was able to add dried yeast (the 100g Allinsons tub, although they also had the pack of sachets showing) to my Tesco order yesterday. I'll see if it turns up.
They had not even been coming up as unavailable previously, nothing showing on a search.

I'd considered the 500g packs, but that would last me a very long time and was at quite a mark up (100g tub = £1 on my order) so I hadn't bothered as I still had some of a club left.

Which reminds me that I meant to put the bread maker on last night as we are out.

BikeRunSki · 30/04/2020 07:45

@NoWordForFluffy - yeast is cultured from other yeast. It can be grown in a lab, so it doesn’t have to be imported, but the Tesco dry active yeast I have was made in China. If this is where worldwide commercial production is based, then this could go some way to explaining shortages. I’ve noticed that a lot of the eBay/Amazon dry yeast is from China too.

possibletesco · 30/04/2020 08:27

Plenty of flour and some yeast in South Manchester. It’s all the local independent shops which seem to have stock.

NightLight99 · 30/04/2020 08:31

Op. I note you are in the Midlands. Are you anywhere near Bridgnorth, Shropshire? I know of a good flour source!

RitaConnors · 30/04/2020 08:36

Morrisons have started selling sacks of bread flour. £9 for 16KG and also all flours in their deli bags that they use for sausage rolls and things ordinarily. 60p for 1KG.

When do you think we'll actually be able to buy flour and yeast again?
Yellowbutterfly1 · 30/04/2020 08:38

My local farm shop, if you can call it that as it’s nowhere near a farm are also bagging up flour.
Unfortunately they are selling it for around £2.65 for 500g so I won’t be getting mine from there.
They had a trolley with quite a few sacks and 3kg bags of flour yesterday, but when I asked them if they were for sale they said no it was for a single customer.

RitaConnors · 30/04/2020 08:38

Sorry, bit late with my Morrison's 'news' there! Blush

ineedaholidaynow · 30/04/2020 08:42

Finally managed to get some yesterday for the first time since panic buying started. Bought some for my neighbours who I am shopping for, so didn’t buy any for us as stock was limited and we still have some at home, so didn’t want to be greedy. Am wondering whether I am going to regret that decision!

NightingalesAtDawn · 30/04/2020 08:53

This is interesting! Im in the Midlands and cannot find any anywhere!
Have you tried ethnic / continental shops? We have a lot of these round where I live. They all have flour, though Eastern European brands and no translation as to what kind (had to ask the cashier exactly what I was buying!)

ghostmous3 · 30/04/2020 10:16

Our local polish shops have plenty of flour. Not sure about yeast though. My work colleague got me some from there yesterday

How to make baking powder

2 teaspoons Cream of Tartar to 1 teaspoon of Bicarbonate of Soda. Dry whisk together to make sure they're mixed well. Scale up using the same 2:1 ratio to fill a small airtight tub with the mixture.

How to make self raising flour

Put 2 teaspoons of that mix - the baking powder - into 150g/6oz of plain flour and sift into a bowl to mix together.

How to make icing sugar

Put normal sugar into a blender. Zap in short bursts until it looks like icing sugar. If you want to store it in a jar, add a tablespoon of cornflour to the mix before zapping.

How to make caster sugar

Sugar in blender - just don't zap it as much as the icing sugar.

Changeofname79 · 30/04/2020 10:44

We haven't had a problem, Tesco didn't have any for a week or so but does now. All our local shops seem to have it.

Changeofname79 · 30/04/2020 10:46

Also a lot of the local cake makers/cake shops are selling cake making products where we are
