To be fed up of people mentioning my height?

I'm 5 foot 3 and people seem to always mention my height! I don't think my height is unusual for a woman??

Mymomsbetterthanyomom · 29/04/2020 16:25

Lol....
I'm 4'11 and I love it!

WorraLiberty · 29/04/2020 16:26

I must have a fuck off face because I'm 5ft 3" and I don't ever recall being called short? Grin

TwoZeroTwoZero · 29/04/2020 16:46

Noone ever mentions my height. I'm 5'1+3/4". Getting trousers that fit is a pain in the arse though!

TutorWoes · 29/04/2020 17:09

I'm 5ft 5 and I always used to think I was quite tall, however I've moved to a new town and I now feel short. Loads of the women here seem to be 5ft 7 plus. I look at a lot of secondary school kids and they all seem so tall!

Abreadsandwich · 29/04/2020 17:21

5'3 isnt even short!

I'm a similar size to some of my DS friends (hes 10Blush!!) And they comment on it ALL. THE. TIME. And one of them comments his shoe size us bigger than mine literally every time he sees me!

As they are children I dont point out that they are being rude, but I did point out that he hadnt done anything special to achieve bigger feet (not that I want big feet!!) they just grew!

BizarreBizarre · 29/04/2020 17:38

I get leg 30 inch from new look. I dont even wear petite clothes as they're far too small for my frame

OP posts:
FuzzyPuffling · 29/04/2020 17:41

I'm 5'8" and would love to be a few inches shorter. Can't buy clothes to fit (not just trouser length, but tights and waistlines and swimsuits etc) and always feel like a big unfeminine lump.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 29/04/2020 17:43

TeenplusTwenties, I usually have to get trousers taken up and it's a pain, even the petite ones.

I'm happy with my height. There are three people in my circle of acquaintances who are similar in height to me, in and around five foot. I remember visiting the Netherlands many years ago, a rural area and people were towering over me. I had to hire a child's bike :)

Occasionally, tall people bend down to talk to me and I'm reminded of how small I am. I don't usually get comments on it though, rude or otherwise!

heretobeanonymous · 29/04/2020 17:44

I'm wondering the same thing about trousers/leggings/jeans as I always struggle!

dickensinthepark · 29/04/2020 17:45

It's very short.

weebarra · 29/04/2020 17:47

I'm 4 10. It's a bit shit buying clothes and I'm fat as well!

dickensinthepark · 29/04/2020 17:47
  • Respond with "do you mean to be rude"? while looking straight at them. Let it hang in the air.*

Grin sorry but this made me laugh, how can it do anything other than hang in the air if the Op is a lot shorter then the person she's talking to?!

averytiredmom · 29/04/2020 17:48

I’m 5’2 and fed up of hearing the comments about my height

mbosnz · 29/04/2020 17:49

I'm 5'1/2".

'Gosh you're so short'

'No shit. I'd not noticed until you pointed it out. You're the very first to ever mention it'.

SpyApp · 29/04/2020 17:50

I'm 5 foot 3 and no one has ever called my short to my face. Not ever.

SadBee · 29/04/2020 17:50

I’m 5’ .5” (the .5 is important to me). To me 5’ 3” would at least mean I might not need to shorten even petite jeans and trousers.

But yes my height has been mentioned a lot over the years. Not so much now I’m 60. Maybe it seems more usual somehow for an older person to be smaller and not as comment worthy.

MadisonMontgomery · 29/04/2020 17:50

I’m 4’11, people do comment a lot, but it doesn’t bother me - I love being short!

mbosnz · 29/04/2020 17:53

I don't 'think' or 'feel' short, if you know what I mean, but I must admit, I've not found it a disadvantage other than not being able to reach the high shelves in shops - which there's always some lovely taller person around that seems to positively enjoy reaching it for me! I've also found that being short somehow seems to invoke many mens' protective instincts, so I've been in some sticky situations where I've had total strangers go all White Knight on me (and I'm so grateful they have).

That would drive me mad, I'll stick up for myself thank you.

SadBee · 29/04/2020 18:04

mbosnz I know what you mean about not ‘feeling’ short. Even at 60 I get surprised at my shortness when I catch myself unawares in a mirror. I look at clothes online and then have to stop myself getting them as I remember they are going to be too long and the proportions wrong. The difficulty I have is with petite clothes still being too long in the legs and arms. It makes getting clothes to fit uneconomical if you nave to factor in alterations. If they are free you can’t just buy something and take it straight home. I’d love to be 5’ 3” and ideally 5’ 5”.

I have had the protective thing from some men too and don’t like it at all. It feels harder to evoke an air of gravitas or elegance. I look like a benign hobbit which really doesn’t help when I want to be taken seriously.

mbosnz · 29/04/2020 18:05

Oh don't you worry, I'll stick up for myself. But I have been in situations, where, not having either weapons or mad ninja skills, I was out of my depth, and was very grateful to have somebody be kind enough to help me out, because otherwise I was in deep kahooey. And I've never managed to grow on demand to get the last lot of bog roll at the back of the top shelf. . .

BarbeDeMaman · 29/04/2020 18:05

My DD is 5ft 10" and hates when people comment. She won't wear heels either. She would love to be 5ft 3!

Can't please everyone.

mbosnz · 29/04/2020 18:07

SadBee, I'm a cross between a benign hobbit and Nanny Ogg, so I feel your pain. . . which is why I get bewildered by it when it happens! But perhaps those kind people would have been just as kind no matter what my height - who knows?! I think perhaps it's just a bit more obvious that a person might be in a situation they can't necessarily handle when they're that much shorter. . .

HelloTerrance · 29/04/2020 18:45

I'm 5ft 2.5, short comments don't bother me at all, I don't see it as an insult. I usually get called petite, tint, like a little doll, pocketsized rather than short.

I like that I can buy cheaper children's shoes and borrow my children's clothes. Nice and comfy on planes and trains.

Wolfgirrl · 29/04/2020 19:14

@mbosnz

Interesting, it might be because short people look more childlike and therefore they feel the need to protect them?

I'm tall and I often get comments, so short women arent alone with it!
