Well starting off with primary schools.

I do believe they talked just recently about when the social distancing laws are being relaxed will be when the schools will be starting to have children back in. There is no guarantee that the 2m will be a requiement then.

The current stage of the lockdown is due to end next Friday. They are still talking in terms of it being 'far' too early to predict and many saying 1st June is the earliest they can see schools being opened as it allows several more weeks to see if the numbers are falling, including the lag of numbers that can happen.

We have also been told that we will be given plenty of warning/time to plan and prepare to be open. That will be good. We were told on the Wednesday that we would be closing on the Friday, which left 2 days of teaching and 2 lots of time after school to scrabble round and find things to send home with the children. Or 2 days to show and given them time to practice using any new online platforms they may not have been familiar with.

I hope we get more than a couple of days.

ruby and why are you being asked to confirm how it would work if we were not returning back? Of course the government would not waste the valuable time of HT and create extra work if they did not intend to go ahead with the phased return.
Our school is also busy making plans for this, I imagine every school in the country is busy making plans to safely return.

ineedaholidaynow · 29/04/2020 17:58

Homebase falls under DIY so was allowed to be open. A garden centre near us is open but only for deliveries, you are not allowed to go in the premises. I assume when people talk about garden centres being open it is so you can go in the actual shop.

I find the goading on this thread fairly obvious.

As an examiner I give it 2/10- the candidate is obviously just regurgitating the study guide. Try to be more original.

Letseatgrandma · 29/04/2020 18:08

Guessing to allow parents bk to work as a first priority

No, I doubt that will be the priority.

Meercatmama · 29/04/2020 18:20

Every day a thread about when schools are going to reopen. They have not yet said they are as we have not met the five government standards. They have said they will reopen at some point possible with certain years going back at different times and when they can make sure RO is below 0.1
Why do you not think school are not a hotbed of infections? If we ever get a virus it round the school within a week and this is no exception. Yes children do not seem to get as bad but some do and what about the ones who have medical problems. How do you think primary schools in particular are going to practice social distancing. Remember adults working in the school get NO PPE equipment In some secondary school there are over 1200 children in a small space. A hotbed of infection. Adults and children in schools will return home to infect others. So infection rates will again rise and a second wave and another lock down.
We all want the to return that includes parents, teachers and children but it is going to have to carefully managed. All teachers know that the education of children is suffering hence vast majority of teachers are putting work on line , marking work and trying to get things ready for a return as well as providing childcare for critical workers. All teachers know that when children return they will be at different stages in the learning and are having to think about now how to make up the learning that has been lost. Return at the wrong time risk a second more deadly peak and loss of life and a second lockdown that would be more detrimental to the children educationally and possibly health wise. We also understand the financial pressures families are under as quite a lot us are suffering the same. We are also trying to work and balance children at home and trying to educate them.
These are your children, your most precious thing in life. Why would you risk them?

BasilDiffuser · 29/04/2020 18:22

We are going to be in lockdown for 17 more months. There will be no proper school until then.

Lardlizard · 29/04/2020 18:24

I’m not sending mine back if they reopen in June anyway, I want to wait till at least September

OP posts:
Levatrice · 29/04/2020 18:25

Where’s the 17 months from

Lardlizard · 29/04/2020 18:27

Some people think this virus will come around every year like the flu, so we can’t stay on lockdown forever, and yes I get why we are doing it atm to protect the nhs etc
But this isn’t achievable staying like this long term

Kinneddar · 29/04/2020 18:28

These threads are ridiculous. Never a day goes by without someone asking when schools/hairdressers (insert closed business name here) will reopen, when we can start seeing family etc.

WE DONT KNOW!!! NOONE KNOWS!!!

Why on earth when the government havent made any decisions do people think a bunch of randoms on an internet forum are going to know. Its completely irrelevant what we think because we have no inside knowledge or crystal balls

YgritteSnow · 29/04/2020 18:31

My HT friend tentatively suggests June. That's what he has been told to work towards, but rushes to tell me that I shouldn't take that as definite. I would prefer September as I love having dd home but do suspect it will be a phased return in June.

But as everyone else says, no one knows.

Mightymurphy · 29/04/2020 18:33

bollocks 17 months. What rubbish.

PorpentiaScamander · 29/04/2020 18:38

thejollygargler

Only years with an odd number, and only children whose first names are in the last half of the alphabet.

Grin my children would be very happy if that were true as they are in even numbered years and the 1st half of the alphabet Grin

MichonnesBBF · 29/04/2020 19:02

I work in Early Years in a school and have 2 children who attend a different school in years 4 and 6.
Logistically staggered entries are going to be a nightmare to navigate, a lot of planning and negotiating will be needed.

It could be i am called back (currently on a rota and working from home) but my own children wont be.
1 Grandparent is shielding other ones are 75+ and have never been available for childcare.
I dont envy the people who have to organise this, as there is going to be a lot of issues.
Whatever the outcome we will muddle through the best way we can, for our own families and our school families.

FlamingGusset · 29/04/2020 19:14

I'm a teacher in France and a progressive return from the 11th of May has been announced. I imagine that a lot of countries will be watching very carefully to see what happens and if they can reopen as well.

Biscuit0110 · 29/04/2020 19:40

These are your children, your most precious thing in life. Why would you risk them?

Because we see little or no actual risk to the children's return perhaps, this is also backed up by every statistic in the world, so I think we can be fairly confident that most children are very low risk. The impact to their mental health and education will have a far greater impact. Look at the world wide stats yourself, and you may feel far more confident.

BelleSausage · 30/04/2020 20:17

I do wonder why people are still replying when it is obvious a certain poster is taking out of their bum.

German study shows children do spread as much as adults.

No one knows anything for certain about schools returning. Not even those who state their opinions as facts.

underneaththeash · 30/04/2020 20:38

My year 4 and year 7 are going back in June. My year 9 (state) can stay at home. DH is a keyworker. Both indies are very keen to go back.
The risk to my children's education is greater than the risk to their health - which is miniscule.

underneaththeash · 30/04/2020 20:40

@BelleSausage - they can spread as much but they don't get anywhere near as ill.

FlamingoAndJohn · 30/04/2020 20:44

The risk to my children's education is greater than the risk to their health - which is miniscule.

It isn’t just the health of the children at risk though is it? It’s the countless members of staff, the parents and drop off and pick up, the bus drivers taking secondary children to school etc....

YgritteSnow · 30/04/2020 21:03

The risk to my children's education is greater than the risk to their health - which is miniscule.

No it isn't. They'll catch up. Everyone else is in the same boat. All ground will be re-covered. Ridiculous thing to say. Typical of the MN angst and rigidity around education.

underneaththeash · 30/04/2020 21:17

@ygrittesnow but they won’t - DS2 has senior school exams in a few months. I drop him off, they can stagger school start times, teachers can wear PPE. There is plenty of space to not go near other children. They don’t get ill - DH and I don’t have pre-existing health conditions, aren’t obese and I don’t want them to suffer for other people.

fuckweasel · 30/04/2020 21:17

they can spread as much but they don't get anywhere near as ill

Unlike all the adults they will come into contact with in a school; teachers, TAs, office staff, canteen workers, cleaners, janitors, bus drivers etc........

underneaththeash · 30/04/2020 21:18

Oh and I’m not just saying this as someone who is not at risk. I’m an optometrist and I’ve seen several patient’s face to face who’ve needed to be seen.
Corona is going to be with us for a king time and we need to learn to live with it.
