Well starting off with primary schools.

Private schools are probably terrified parents will pull their children out.

Biscuit0110 · 29/04/2020 17:23

We will probably see a race between private schools . Most schools are in competition for fees, and will want to be seen as offering the best education to their children regardless of CoVid.

Biscuit0110 · 29/04/2020 17:26

The preverbal is going to hit the private school sector given the recession we are now in, so they simply can not afford to sit back for six months and see parents disappear to schools that are showing much more commitment to their child's prospects. There aren't many parents signing cheques of this magnitude that will be prepared to see their children languish for another four months plus.

I love how there are people on here that seem to know more about when schools are reopening than head teachers.

ineedaholidaynow · 29/04/2020 17:30

Many private schools are providing full timetable of work. DS starts online learning at 8.30 and finishes about 3.30 and has homework. He thinks he is actually getting more work than he did at school

Mightymurphy · 29/04/2020 17:30

Scotland here.

I sincerely hope our kids go back in some way in June. My kids are both primary 7. They’ve had no induction at high school. I really hope they go back for at least two weeks before the Summer holidays start. They are missing so much in terms of residential trip, parties etc.

I can see the earlier primary years not going back until August however, if the government want people back to work there has to be some form of childcare. I appreciate not every worker needs it but, as an example, all of us at my work do.

Biscuit0110 · 29/04/2020 17:30

We may know Friday, if not it will be next Thursday - then there will no more speculation.

Biscuit0110 · 29/04/2020 17:31

crazy are you a headteacher??

WhiteWriting · 29/04/2020 17:33

go on Biscuit, I'll bite. Where are you getting your insider info from? Are you sleeping with Gavin Williamson?

Biscuit0110 · 29/04/2020 17:34

How did you guess white?? Grin but don't tell anyone!!!

Lardlizard · 29/04/2020 17:35

What I don’t get though why are hairdressers reopening in the first group ?! Not exactly a priority ?!

supersop60 · 29/04/2020 17:36

One of the private schools I work in has reduced the fees for the summer term, so it's unlikely they'll be returning.
It has been stated today that the schools will not be open in the summer holiday, and to answer a pp - teachers in the state sector get paid an equal amount every month, not pro rata.

Lianepl · 29/04/2020 17:36

It will be Y10 and Y12 initially when secondaries open as they are the most important just now.

NOBODY KNOWS
And you are assuming a great deal. If the focus of reopening schools is going to be to get the economy going again, it will be Primaries that will go back first, not Secondaries.
But mostly:
NOBODY KNOWS.

Same with my DC at their state school. I’m very pleased to hear they won’t be messing with the holidays-the kids will need a long break.

Biscuit0110 · 29/04/2020 17:37

No I agree lard the mental health and education of an entire generation of children going to the wall really is of little consequence when we think of the roots and the split ends we are all having to endure.

hopeishere · 29/04/2020 17:38

Where did you see hairdressers reopening??

Biscuit0110 · 29/04/2020 17:40

My dc also doing full timetable on line, 8 hours a day with lots of homework each evening, that doesn't mean it is of the same quality as a teacher led lesson, there will also be things that have been missed. GCSE students will not have covered the syllabus.
Schools have next years results to consider, and will want to ensure children do not fail (this of course will reflect badly on any fee paying school especially)

Biscuit0110 · 29/04/2020 17:42

hope hairdressers are not reopening yet. Garden centres, recycling centres, some non essential shops and business are now returning and phased school return look to be first.

RubyJack · 29/04/2020 17:43

I am a Headteacher in the State Sector, we genuinely do not have a date for returning yet. We are just being asked to consider how it could work(phased return) in our settings.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 29/04/2020 17:45

Children may be lower risk but they can’t go by themselves can they? It has to be safe for staff and the 2m distancing in place between everyone. That’s going to be a huge challenge.

ineedaholidaynow · 29/04/2020 17:47

@Biscuit0110 where has it been confirmed that garden centres etc are reopening?

Thefaceofboe · 29/04/2020 17:49

NOBODY KNOWS

MoverOfPaper · 29/04/2020 17:51

I’d forgotten about Middle schools! The area of Herts which used to have them no longer does.

I’m not sure about Y6 going back to go into their secondary school. I’m in London and the waiting lists usually move so children won’t necessarily have the school they’ll eventually end up with. Then there are the children going from state to private or private to state. That would be tricky to coordinate.

Biscuit0110 · 29/04/2020 17:52

Ineed Squires garden centre is open, as is homebase here

theluckiest · 29/04/2020 17:54

Guessing to allow parents bk to work as a first priority

Problem with this is that not all the children will go back at the same time. And children may be going in part time, eg. a certain number of days or just mornings. Which will be an absolute head ache for most working parents I'd imagine, myself included. Particularly those who rely on grandparents. Or who have children in different years or completely different schools.

This is what the schools that have begun to return in Europe are doing. They've also put in strict social distancing in classrooms.

I'm not a head, but a senior teacher and can tell you that there is no way all children will go back at the same time 'to normal.' If they do this, you may as well scrap social distancing completely.

It's going to be phased, that's for sure. And probably a complete mess for a while as people adjust to a new normal.
