A good homework laptop for under £400?

Hi, I'd like to get my son a laptop to do his homework with. I'll use it too for work occasionally and my priority is speed of use rather than looks. Can I get something decent for under £400? Am I better off getting a refurbished laptop for that price, perhaps?

Which programmes does he need? Can he do everything online using Google docs, etc? Then a Chromebook would be a good bet and they're not too expensive.

Also, forgot to mention, I use a Lenovo for work and my own laptop is a Lenovo yoga. I recommend that brand for reliability.

Chromebooks are not good for me, really. I'd be very happy with a refurbished Lenovo. Sharpandshinyteeth, can I ask where you got yours from?

Grabbed a Asus for less the £400, it's doing some very heavy programs though I had to add more fans to keep it cool enough.

We bought one of these, laptop and converts to tablet/touchscreen, but think it’s out of stock at the moment
