Please be honest - do you have a packet of yeast gathering dust?

We have been making bread 5-6 times a week for nearly 20 years in a machine, but I've been unable to find yeast in the shops since lockdown. Friends gave me a couple of packs (one was out of date but still worked!) but now I'm down to a few days' worth only. I was able to bulk order some bread flour from a mill last month, and have enough flour for about 2-3 months.

I'm curious to know if the people who bought yeast at the start of lockdown have been using it.

And why is it that nearly everything is back in the shops EXCEPT flour and yeast (in my neck of the woods, anyway).

I'm also a regular baker of cakes and will run out of plain flour quite soon too.

I'm happy to buy bread in the short term although a) my freezer is small so I can only freeze about 3 small loaves and b) this means I'd have to go to the supermarket more often and I'm trying to only go once a week.

Anyone else with this issue?

@Shopaholic100 - 1tsp of Fermipan is equivalent to 1 7g sachet, just use it as you would your normal yeast. Keep it in a sealed container to keep it fresh, it works really well.

"Don't go raising" proved to be an accurate prediction rosegoldwatcher Grin
However, if anyone comes to try to steal the bread flour that I can't use as I have no yeast, I could probably knock them out with today's effort.

Delivered today. Pizza's back on the menu chez rose!

I have no idea why I used an apostrophe there!

INeedNewShoes · 01/05/2020 20:42

Nothing wrong with your apostrophe! Glad you've got the flour!

INeedNewShoes · 01/05/2020 20:43

I have no idea why I over-exclamation marked my post Confused Lockdown is taking its toll...

NoWordForFluffy · 02/05/2020 08:17

@MotherWol, why would 1tsp of Fermipan = just over 2 tsp of sachet yeast (a sachet is just over 2tsp)? Is it more potent?

NotMeNoNo · 02/05/2020 09:08

A heaped teaspoon might be, not the little Panasonic measure.

NoWordForFluffy · 02/05/2020 09:18

We use measuring spoons; I don't have a spoon with my Panasonic (it's second hand).

I get a sachet of yeast in every packet of DD’s prescription gluten free flour. Never use it and can’t get anyone to take the damn stuff off me either!

Quicklittlenamechange · 02/05/2020 09:56

I got some fresh yeast from the bakers and then forgot Id ordered some fresh in my online shop.
Have stashed it in the freezer.
Im going to give cinnamon rolls a go today

@SoupDragon - I made your flapjacks today (some delay in getting condensed milk as son bought evaporated instead) and all at the rosegold house have declared it a success. Thank you.

Aforementioned son came home from the most recent Tesco shop with a 16 kg bag of plain flour. I have an almost full pot of baking powder so was able to make lemon drizzle cupcakes.

500g Red yeast on order from Amazon - it has gone down in price!
I bloody love baking.

SoupDragon · 09/05/2020 09:10

Glad the flapjacks were approved :)

AnnofPeeves · 09/05/2020 14:22

Did you know you can turn evaporated milk into condensed? I had no idea until I went shopping without my glasses and came home with evaporated by mistake! You just add sugar and heat until it's melted. Works perfectly.

rosegoldwatcher · 09/05/2020 18:46

Anne - thanks for that. I will give it a try.

AnnofPeeves · 10/05/2020 10:29

No problem. I used less sugar than most websites suggested, so about one of those plastic ikea children's cups of sugar to a large tin of evaporated milk
