Please be honest - do you have a packet of yeast gathering dust?

We have been making bread 5-6 times a week for nearly 20 years in a machine, but I've been unable to find yeast in the shops since lockdown. Friends gave me a couple of packs (one was out of date but still worked!) but now I'm down to a few days' worth only. I was able to bulk order some bread flour from a mill last month, and have enough flour for about 2-3 months.

I'm curious to know if the people who bought yeast at the start of lockdown have been using it.

And why is it that nearly everything is back in the shops EXCEPT flour and yeast (in my neck of the woods, anyway).

I'm also a regular baker of cakes and will run out of plain flour quite soon too.

I'm happy to buy bread in the short term although a) my freezer is small so I can only freeze about 3 small loaves and b) this means I'd have to go to the supermarket more often and I'm trying to only go once a week.

Anyone else with this issue?

I had a tin of it from a long time ago. Made pizza with it recently but the dough didn't rise so had to through yeast away. Can't find anymore anywhere.

Ohffs66 · 27/04/2020 16:47

@longformyoldnormal I got 00 Italian flour from Amazon last week, it said it wouldn't be back in stock but it arrived within a few days. It was 6 quid for a kilo which is extortionate but I was so happy when it came!

I've managed to get granary bread flour and strong white in 16kg sacks on ebay. ( Done a little sharing with the neighbours ) Have also bought 50g dried yeast.

16 kg sacks are from Heygates Mill I think.
A bit worried when I bought them but the yeast is fine in my breadmaker and so is the granary flour (although produces a quite soft loaf)

Had a look online and see some on eBay for £18!! So I think that's where most of it.

Hope whoevers selling doesn't make any sales 😠

nettytree · 27/04/2020 16:49

I've been lucky, I managed to get both bread flour and a tin of yeast today. I bought a breadmaker a month ago. Going to make a fruit loaf today.

okiedokieme · 27/04/2020 16:52

Back in stock today in Lidl, haven't seen any for 2 months. Now if only I could source bread flour

BurnIt · 27/04/2020 16:54

I've found a local company that's now selling direct. I've ordered a sourdough starter through the post!

This is available on Amazon. Says it can be frozen.

My yeast is gathering dust but only because it’s been in my cupboard so long it’s out of date Blush

user1495884620 · 27/04/2020 16:57

We had half a tin as we are occasional pizza makers but I think we have only made pizzas twice since lockdown. Have regularly been getting flour without any problems, but haven't needed to buy bread flour yet which might make a difference.

minisoksmakehardwork · 27/04/2020 16:57

@hippospot - it's like rocking horse poo round here too. Our local Tesco had a delivery and the entire 2 cases went in less than 24 hours. I can only assume people being at home have decided to take the time to make bread because they can.

Can't get flour - SR, plain or strong in any supermarket either.

I agree that it is frustrating when we have taken it for granted that the supplies have always been there. I guess the supply and demand chain will catch up soon enough like it has done with toilet rolls.

On the plus side, there are an awful lot of people who are now getting to experience the yumminess that is homemade bread, cakes and biscuits.

CeibaTree · 27/04/2020 16:58

We did have a packet languishing (it went out of date last month) but we have used it up now making bread, and we managed to get some more in our last delivery.

Racheyg · 27/04/2020 16:58

op, we make our own pizza bases and I normally use the sachets which Lidl and Aldi sell. I ran out half and went to my local Turkish store and they had a 500g bag..........im going to be making dough for a very long time :)

Rafflesway · 27/04/2020 16:59

To quote Kylie, “I should be so lucky.” 🙄

Been making soda bread instead which doesn’t need yeast. 😁

waspfig · 27/04/2020 17:02

I read that there's no shortage of flour but there is a shortage of 1kg packaging. Apparently most flour produced goes into trade and manufacture, only a small percentage goes for retail in the supermarkets. Hopefully the supply chain will adapt soon enough.

Samcro · 27/04/2020 17:04

I got yeast last week in asda. It was the silly sachets though, but i was very pleased

PalePinkCarnation · 27/04/2020 17:12

I’ve got a packet of doves farm dried yeast, but could I get bread flour ? Nope.
Although I’ve managed to get some brown gluten free bread flour for our gluten free family member
Sainsburys had yeast last week, but no flour

PalePinkCarnation · 27/04/2020 17:17

Funnily, all my friend's and acquaintances in a nearby village are baking bread etc.

For work I pass their local shop, which had all the bread reduced at the front door, because no one is buying it.

At least I was allowed in this shop, further up the valley, they are calling for shops to only admit “locals”
( I travel a little with work )

NightingalesAtDawn · 27/04/2020 17:22

Try looking in corner shops and continental shops. Might not be a British brand (most of the flour here is eastern European of some kind). Or ask at your local bakery. Some of them are packing their own supplies of flour and yeast for retail sale.

MotherWol · 27/04/2020 17:35

My sister posted me some from her nearby Polish deli (Barbakan in Chorlton for Manchester mnetters) - it really is worth asking in smaller shops or bakeries, not just supermarkets.

We like to bake but usually it’s a weekend activity, but now as we’re home, it’s something we can do regularly. It means we don’t have to go to the shops as often. I really don’t think that many people have bought it and aren’t using it, it’s just we’ve all had the same good idea at the same time.

lucysmam · 27/04/2020 17:38

I've been trying to get some for weeks with no joy so was rationing the two sachets I had left.

The girls' Nanna unearthed a packet of sachets she thinks I bought her from Lidl at some point & sent them round here for me...not even checked the date on them. They all seem ok so far.

Purplequalitystreet · 27/04/2020 17:40

Probably, but it will be from way before lockdown. I have a sudden urge to bake about once a year. It never lasts long

HasaDigaEebowai · 27/04/2020 17:43

I do have it but I bought it for my brexit stash and we do make bread 3 times a week so we get through a fair amount.

maddiemookins16mum · 27/04/2020 17:43

Yep, and pasta. It will get used...just not right now.

ReadilyAvailable · 27/04/2020 17:44

I have a tin that’s at least 2 years old. I used to make pizza quite a lot, but after DS was diagnosed with coeliac disease I gave up on bread based baking as it’s such a disappointment. It’s probably all dead now anyway.
