Please be honest - do you have a packet of yeast gathering dust?

We have been making bread 5-6 times a week for nearly 20 years in a machine, but I've been unable to find yeast in the shops since lockdown. Friends gave me a couple of packs (one was out of date but still worked!) but now I'm down to a few days' worth only. I was able to bulk order some bread flour from a mill last month, and have enough flour for about 2-3 months.

I'm curious to know if the people who bought yeast at the start of lockdown have been using it.

And why is it that nearly everything is back in the shops EXCEPT flour and yeast (in my neck of the woods, anyway).

I'm also a regular baker of cakes and will run out of plain flour quite soon too.

I'm happy to buy bread in the short term although a) my freezer is small so I can only freeze about 3 small loaves and b) this means I'd have to go to the supermarket more often and I'm trying to only go once a week.

Anyone else with this issue?

Yes and the bread tins are still in their amazon packaging. I bought them before lockdown though. I just can’t be arsed right now.

GrumpyHoonMain · 27/04/2020 18:27

I have just substituted yeast with baking powder / bicarb and the rise on the bread has been just fine.

Cakeweek · 27/04/2020 18:27

I'm happy to post you half our yeast. I can't get flour and DS is allergic to most bread as he has a soya allergy so we're not having any. DM me with your address

The yeast in my cupboard is over a year out of date, may get used yet...

NoWordForFluffy · 27/04/2020 18:29

We bought 500g dried yeast from eBay (£10.40) and 16kg bread flour from Windsor Cake Crafts. We also got 16kg plain flour at the same time. They have the same yeast as I got from eBay for £8.99 but I forgot to add it to my order and they couldn't amend it for me.

rosegoldwatcher · 27/04/2020 18:30

Have some yeast - not the type that is suitable for my breadmaker, sadly. Have no strong white though. Just found some available on Amazon - £15.99 including delivery for a 16 kg sack.

If your supermarket has a bakery ask them if they've any yeast they can give you for free. My one will give you a fairly decent amount for free because they've so much

I make my own bread usually but usually use a bread mix and then add to it. I couldn't get any bread mix or anything- but was delighted to find I had a pack of strong flour and a pack of yeast I had completely forgotten about. Are these people who are buying all the bread mix flour & yeast stock piling or actually using it?

TiptopJ · 27/04/2020 18:45

Yes I have bread flour and yeast at the back of my cupboard. In my defence though I'd estimate they've been there at least 2 years. I go through phases with my bread making

Beautiful3 · 27/04/2020 18:46

You can buy it from here.

I have lots of yeast (I regularly bake bread, but can never remember how much yeast I have so always end up buying extra) however it is gathering dust as I can't get any bread flour. Anyone want to swap? Smile

Any recommendations for good recipes for bread with plain or self raising flour and yeast?

DropZoneOne · 27/04/2020 18:47

A chap in Tesco yesterday asked the baker for fresh yeast and got given some. I had no idea this was a thing.

PorpentiaScamander · 27/04/2020 18:49

I have 7 of the little packets. They are only 'gathering dust' until I can get flour again.

TeddyIsaHe · 27/04/2020 18:53

Also try your local Eastern European shops - Dp is Polish and so we shop in them often, they’ve always had hand sanitiser, antibac, flour, yeast, baby milk etc even in the height of panic buying.

Pelleas · 27/04/2020 18:55

Just checked and my yeast packet was best before August ... that's August 2017. Blush

I think I bought it to make my own naan breads, but they turned out rubbish so I didn't use it again.

ludicrouslemons · 27/04/2020 19:01

I've got yeast but can't get flour anywhere.

DecadentDeity · 27/04/2020 19:02

I have some sachets - I gave them away to friends along with some flour. I buy a big packet of yeast and store it in the fridge so haven't need to buy yeast in ages. Also we're using less yeast and allowing a longer prove, the bread tastes better and the yeast goes further. Have bought flour in bulk from a catering supplier.

IHateCoronavirus · 27/04/2020 19:10

Op do you live anywhere near an international super market? They seem to be well stocked. We go to the localish Turkish one (DH is Turkish) and last time I got a box of yeast and 5kg bag of strong flour as we make a lot of traditional breads and baked goods.

TheWooisStrong · 27/04/2020 19:15

I make sourdough - ask around and someone will have a starter, or make your own. It’s very satisfying.

KittenVsBox · 27/04/2020 19:20

I've got yeast - a box of 8 sachets, but cant use it because I cant get flour.
I usually make pizza once a month, and Danish pastries for breakfast once a month.
I'd also make bread once week right now, as that what I cant stock enough of for a week.

wowsaidtheowl · 27/04/2020 19:23

You can get Fermipan red yeast from amazon in 500g bags - it’s just the same stuff as the sachets. It’s a lot of yeast to get through though!

MegaClutterSlut · 27/04/2020 19:26

No yeast here or in the shops. Ive also got plenty of plain flour but can't find baking powder anywhere either

vampirethriller · 27/04/2020 19:27

I bought some on eBay. Fermipan, it's very good and didn't take long to get here. I've been making my own bread for years ago I've always got some in.

You can also do this in Asda. Not tried it in Sainsbury.
