What's good on Netflix that isn't crime, murder, drugs etc?

I'm fed up with crime in all its forms, including the documentaries like Tiger King and Don't F**k With Cats. I also dislike most fantasy and superhero stuff. I've just watched Unorthodox which I loved, and I realised that what I want to watch at the moment is human stories, social and emotional dramas and historical things. What else is there on Netflix for me that I might enjoy? Thank you.

Kim's Convinience & Modern Family on Amazon.

MummaGiles · 26/04/2020 09:47

Completely agree with Schitts Creek, it’s absolutely brilliant but you do need to give it a few episodes for it to find its feet.

Community, The Good Place, Jane the Virgin, LoveSick, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Crazy Ex Girlfriend, Episodes, Working Moms, Friends from College, Great News.

MummaGiles · 26/04/2020 09:48

And if you have Amazon - the US Office

Special it’s a very good fairly short series.

If you enjoyed Unorthodox, then Shtisel is a brilliant choice- based around an orthodox family in Jerusalem. It's extremely well done and the actress who plays Esty in unorthodox is in this too :) There's 24 episodes

I just watched Self made which is also worth a watch

Janaih · 26/04/2020 09:50

Another vote for The Crown. One of those I wish I could watch again for the first time.

TheNestedIf · 26/04/2020 09:56

AJ And The Queen

This went under the radar a bit but it was quite cheering, albeit with a bittersweet end and you only have to invest in 10 episodes.

ScribblingMilly · 26/04/2020 09:59

If you liked Unorthodox you should love Shtisel - same actress, set in Israel, subtitles.

EveryDayIsLikeMonday · 26/04/2020 10:00

Self Made. Only a short series but I enjoyed it.
An African American washerwoman rises from poverty to build a beauty empire and become the first female self-made millionaire. Based on a true story.

AGoodPodcastAndANiceCupOfTea · 26/04/2020 10:01

I dislike everything you dislike but I LOVED Russian Doll. I also really liked After Life. I've just started watching Schitts Creek and it's great but tbh there are too many seasons for me! I also loved Grace and Frankie but I think it would have been better if they'd ended it last season. I have just started on Kim's Convenience and that is really nice. I think I'll be having a tv night this evening!

Mikki2019 · 26/04/2020 10:01

Shtisel - amazing

ScribblingMilly · 26/04/2020 10:02

Oh, and The Kominsky Method with Michael Douglas & Alan Arkin.

PoppyFleur · 26/04/2020 10:03

Grace and Frankie
Jane the Virgin
After Life
The Crown
White Collar
Suits
Gilmore Girls

DamsonDress · 26/04/2020 10:09

Great suggestions so far. Schitts Creek, Dead To Me, The Crown and Afterlife all excellent.

I also liked Messiah and loved Greenleaf.

When They See Us was remarkable but not light entertainment. It's one that stays with you.

DamsonDress · 26/04/2020 10:12

Oh yes! Russian Doll - that was brilliant. How could I forget that!

And Orange is the New Black. I initially rejected that reading the synopsis and the hype but I'm so glad I gave it a go - fantastic.

boatyardblues · 26/04/2020 10:13

If you’re OK with subtitles and really want character driven stories with a heart, I recommend Korean dramas. There are some great ones on Netflix. There is a long running thread in streamed TV with a genre separated list of recommendations in the header. If you post telling us what you are looking for/the mood you are in, the thread regulars can point you to one that matches your mood. Like all telly, shows run the spectrum from really classy stuff through to trashy popcorn TV, but the decent stuff is so well written and acted and the cinematography is amazing. The main thing that turned me on to it is the very character driven (vs plot) story-telling - you really care about the characters and laugh and cry along with them.

Another vote for Self Made, true story about Madam CJ Walker! Short but interesting human story.

boatyardblues · 26/04/2020 10:14

And it the was relentless grimness of so much of the crime-based content on Netflix that made me go looking for fresh air & sunshine.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 26/04/2020 10:14

After Life - second series just out and it's excellent!

Moooooooooooooooooo · 26/04/2020 10:18

Godless, loved it.

Purple54 · 26/04/2020 10:21

Bonus Family as suggested by a PP.
As long as you don't mind subtitles.
It's about Scandinavian step families and the dynamics between them. I really enjoyed it.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 26/04/2020 10:25

The Good Place

Russian Doll (although I’m not sure if that is still in there)

Chickoletta · 26/04/2020 10:27

Sex Education.

I also just binged 2 series of The Split - ITV hub, not Netflix. Brilliant.

EveryDayIsLikeMonday · 26/04/2020 10:33

I also enjoyed Atypical.

AtiaoftheJulii · 26/04/2020 10:33

Virgin River - feels a bit schmaltzy at first but I surprised myself by really enjoying it.
